Diesel battery charger on a petrol engine?

Featured Replies

Not specific to this forum but it's as good a place as any to ask.

My VRS was a diesel and so I bought a "diesel specific" battery charger from Halfords.

Now that I've changed to a petrol engine, is it safe to use on my current car?  For what it's worth, it has a "trickle" mode.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

There's no such thing as a "diesel specific" battery - it's just a battery with a high starting current capacity. On my petrol Citroen C1 I have had the "cold climate diesel" battery for the last 5 years with no ill effect on the alternator or battery. Something I did after much research and taking into account my training and experience as a Chartered Electrical Engineer who has worked as head of electronics for an automotive consultancy.

As there's no such thing as a "diesel specific" battery ergo there is no such thing as a "diesel specific" battery charger - that's just Halfrauds talking BS.

FFS, diesel uses ac. Petrol uses dc. As any fule kno.

Halfords don't make this stuff up you know

what Dave said but without the chartered electrical engineer status.

Thanks all.  It does say on the charger "only to be used on diesel engined cars 2000cc or over" so I assumed it would damage a petrol engined car.

Should have known better from Halfords......charged me £2 for a fuse once and then I discovered you could get about 50 assorted fuses on a piece of card in PoundWorld :swear:
