Over revving Yeti 1.2 TSI DSG

Featured Replies

Hi, I am lucky enough to have a new 2016 automatic Yeti 1.2.. What concerns me, is that when going down a very steep hill, and braking , after each touch of the brakes it changes down a gear, eventually to 3rd gear and is revving at nearly 4000 revs. The trouble is , it seems to be staying in 3rd despite lifting Off the brake and accelerator. Even pressing on the accelerator doesn't make it change up. To remedy this I have to put it into manual to change up. The Same happens going up a steep hill. Am I missing a trick here? When driving a ford Mondeo in USA all I had to do was lift off the accelarator, and it would change up. Any advise would be very welcome.

It sounds like it might just be behaving as a DSG should be doing.

They do behave differently from Ford Automatics even the Power-shift if you were driving one of those.

Our 1st Yeti 1.2 DSG did the same, as does our second.

No idea whether it's a fault or simply typical DSG behaviour. I just move over to manual and nudge it.

There is an inclination sensor fitted to the car that detects when you're going up or down a hill and combines that with engine load and throttle position etc to decide to change down or not to provide extra engine braking.

It's perfectly normal and unfortunately as you've found out the only way round is to use manual mode.

There is no danger is letting the engine rev by the way and there is no possibility of over revving in drive mode. While using engine braking and your foot off the throttle you are using zero fuel and not having to use the brakes to slow down.

Any chance you are driving in "S" sport mode?

Offski is correct. Your dsg is working as it should. My previous yeti was 1.2 dsg. Going down hills your dsg will hold the revs to help with engine braking. Similarly going up hills your dsg will hold the revs before changing up, delivering optimum power and not labouring the engine. The 1.2 dsg is a great motor delivering surprising amounts of torque. Drive and enjoy, however if you are still in doubt consult your dealer.

Same with the SEAT Ibiza 1.2 DSG (as you might expect). Might daughter used to yell "Whose driving this car?" as the gears changed down and the revs soared going down hill. Its not a Yeti thing, its a 1.2 DSG thing. My yeti does it as well of course.

There is definitely some sort of hill detection, are they called topodyne?

Changes down to give engine braking, but the 1.2tsi is so free running tends to just run the engine fast.

Many thanks every one , you have put my mind at rest .! I suspected there must be some kind of inclinometer (?) Coming from an Octavia 1.9 diesel, I'm just not used to the high revs, but I am really enjoying driving it.
