OPC with RNS 510

Featured Replies

Hello again everyone.

I know it's a hot topic but everyone seems to experience this in a different way so many of the other topics I have read are of not much use.

I have a 07 Elegance Octavia and I am willing to get the parking sensors to show up on the display.

Based on my research (by checking the vehicle identification sticker codes) I figured out the car came without any radio or navigation when new.

7Q0 = Without navigation device
8AA = Without radio

However, someone has installed a RNS 510 on the car. The RNS has a 2009 date on it.

The car is also fitted with OPC

7X2 = Park distance control, front and rear

It would be nice to get some help with this as I might look into doing it myself.
Below are the VCDS parts details:

Bottom line - is it only a matter of rewiring or coding or do I really need a new CAN gateway for this?

I presume you mean you have PDC (Park Distance Control), rather than OPS (Optical Parking System).

Spot on. My bad, mixed them up.

Your other option is a Polar FIS.

Had one in my Octavia and it enables:

PDC/OPS emulation display on RNS 510

Climate control display

Passenger mirror dip on reverse

Comfort indicator flashes up to 10x

Plus many diagnostic settings such as DRL, light and rain sensitivity.

It plugs in via the can bus and may work out easier and cheaper especially with all the other features it brings.

In ta#hat case then you'll need to upgrade the PDC controller to OPS to get the display on the Columbus. The gateway will be okay, but as Phil points out it's easier to go with the option he volunteered.

Wouldn't it be easier to just replace the sensors controler?

I assume this means my CAN is good enough for this, right?

I would rather keep it as close as possible to factory setup. I always avoided 3rd party stuff.

Is the Polar FIS a plug and play device? Will I be able to revert back to what everything was like before by just removing it?

You need to replace the controller, remove CAN wiring from one controller and add it to a different one, change some other wiring about a bit (from memory). I've not used a Polar box but I think it's plug & play, and removal is just as easy.

Yes the Polar FIS is completely plug and play and can be removed at any time with no lasting changes to the car.

It does require maxidot though.

Thanks for your input guys!

In that case I may look into the Polar FIS. I will be a little busy this week with work but I will definitely do something soon.

I will come back with an answer on how it turned out.

The thread is still open for discussion or tips if anyone feels like me or anyone else should know anything else. :)

I went the wiring and replacement controller way a few years back (as rusty referred to). Polar brings many other benefits but if it's just OPS you want, it can be done quite a bit more cheaply, although a bit of work. See here for more details.

As you can see I learnt as I went along....

Right so as it turns out, a work colleague of mine seems to have an Auto-Polar FIS but it doesn't work on his Golf V GTI (he bought a used one so he can display technical parameters).

He offered to borrow it to me so I can try it out, see if it works on my car. Anyhow, my question is - Will my RNS 510 require a code if I unplug the gateway and plug it back in together with the Polar? I would like to know this in advance so I can order one off ebay if it's the case.

PS: I added an aux cable a few days ago without disconnecting anything and the code was not written anywhere on the radio :(

You should be ok as it is stored in the cluster and transmitted to the RNS510 unit when you start up. I also have a polar BT box which plugs in in the same way and supports the newer BT modules in the pre FL and no code is required.

Thanks.

What about coding - the manual for the Polar says you should do some coding afterwards and it warns against issues with the power windows and power steering. Did you face any of those?

No. But then mine is the only the BT box. Hopefully Phil-E will be along and can comment, but I don't think he had any trouble when he fitted his to his preFL

There was zero coding required for the Polar FIS. It does all the coding itself (makes sure the stereo and dash or coded correctly for you).

If your power steering and windows do reset (think they only do if you disconnect the battery) then all you do is turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right and then drive the car to reset the steering and the windows are reset by holding them all the way down and then all the way up.

I didn't bother disconnecting my battery when I installed it and it worked just fine.

Make sure you install the correct firmware version before installing in your car:

You need to choose the RED version (although your maxidot is white it is the same version as the red VW one).

Thanks Phil!

Why do I need to choose the red version instead of the white one? Is the white one for the FL version?

Edited by Inex

Correct yes. White is for FL and Red is for pre-FL.

It is named after the VW versions as they were Red (same version as the pre-FL Skoda one).

Nice.

Thanks for this! I just got hold of the Polar earlier today and I plan on trying it out this week when I have some spare time.

Keep you posted.
