Dashboard electric warnings haywire

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2000 w reg Fabia 1.4 petrol estate.

The dashboard has started to malfunction in the following ways:

- flashing red temp warning light (when starting from cold)

- fuel gauge suddenly drops to empty

- immobiliser light flashing (,car with key under it)

- occasional steering triangle warning light

They are all fairly random - sometimes go back to normal if I restart.

I've changed the battery but there is no improvement.

The only change I have made since buying is putting in a stereo.

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks for your help,

Josh

Hi Josh,

Could be a bad solder joint on the back of the cluster. Worth checking for. The cluster is very easy to remove.

Yep, most of those could be down to cracked solder joints, see post #58 here for a description of how to access the back of the relevant connector with minimal effort.

In the linked post, only the immobiliser pins are mentioned, but in your case check them all, as some of the other functions you mention are wired in at the other end of the connector.

Excellent - thanks - I'll have a look tomorrow.

If its too far gone - can you easily replace the entire instrument panel - or would that cause immobiliser issues?

Instrument cluster is coded to the car. If you fitted a new or used cluster it would have to be coded.

Well... Excellent advice from everyone. I've reflowed those solder joints today and all the warning lights have gone - and the fuel gauge works! I'm sure if I'd gone to the garage it would have cost hundreds.

To anyone who wants to try it themselves - it took 20 minutes and was easy even for an amateur like me.

Thanks again for all your help.

Good news and well done.

It'll be interesting to observe the occurrence of these faults over the next few years, and whether they 'march forward with time' eventually affecting any Mk1 after x number of years, or whether it's always the early cars that seem to suffer.  I must admit that when I first heard about these 'dodgy solder joints' I was sceptical, because the 2005-era spare (secondhand/used) cluster I looked at was absolutely immaculate. Not a single sign of any such problem.  Maybe the earlier Mk1s had the misfortune to coincide with the early days of lead-free solder and the steep part of the learning curve about what worked and proved durable, and what didn't.

Well done, Josh!
