Painting bumper trim gloss black

Featured Replies

I was thinking about prepping and painting the bumper trim on my black Octavia VRS a glossy black.

Has anybody else done this? Any thoughts on whether it would look good?

Black plastic/rubber polish will give it a sheen, requires no preparation and can be easily wiped off paintwork.

Clean it with peanut butter ( smooth variety )

Works a treat,

Or a heat gun...

I'd suggest heat gun, i recently used that on all my plastic trim, and it came out perfect, brought all the oils back to the surface so they look as thought from the store, brand new.

Or a silicone water dispersant (not aerosol; you want a trigger bottle), take some out and apply to the trim with a cloth, trying to get little or none on the paint.

Only problem with that is that it will fade again, and if you don't get it just right, it comes back blotchy and worse than it was before.

As they are rough textured you would ideally need to either sand them smooth first, then apply a plastic etch primer and top coat, or you would need to use a high build etch primer (basically thicker and self levelling, so creates a smooth finish over any imperfections) followed by the gloss top coat.

I think eventually itll cause headaches, recommend using some of the ideas mentioned.  I use Meguiars Endurance tyre gel on a sponge.  Easy.

Yes you need to be be accurate to avoid blotchiness, but it's not hard and doesn't take much time, however it wont fade, I've been doing this to cars for years and it's always outlasted re-painting the trim by years, or using tyre compounds such as meguiars
