Drum Brakes help

Featured Replies

Rear brake is binding slightly...I thought it was a faulty wheel cylinder so I've changed this but its still doing it. I notice that it only does it on the foot brake and not the handbrake and that if I give the drum a tap with a hammer it will release and spin freely how it should.

Any idea as I've now done a wheel cylinder and regreased everything and can't see what the problem is.

Help appreciated.

PS Is for mrs's Lupo Fabia is working how it should at the moment haha

Did you strip out the shoes, springs etc and clean everything to make sure everything is moving freely? Also check for a 'lip' on the drum.

No lip on the drum...No I was trying to avoid doing that really as I guessed it was the wheel cylinder so I changed that first off. I'm guessing is that the next task?? I was wandering if anything else could be done while it was on the car.

I'd suspect a binding pivot.

Welcome.

Best ask in the section for which ever car you have. So Fabia Mk1 section.

All parts/part numbers should be shown here: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2001-225/6/609-609020/

Item 3 is worth considering as a replacement, they are little plastic discs that mount into the backplate and give a low-friction surface for the edges of the shoes to move on. If your car has never had replacements, they may have worn to virtually nothing by now.  Cheap but probably only available from VAG dealership or TPS. Maybe worth trying the part number in ebay/google. 6 on each backplate, 3 for each shoe.

Many many thanks

Hehe, I think you'll have 256mm front discs, so this page should cover it.

Loads of different part numbers for pads, I think yours will be one of the part numbers with 9U0 (no pad wear sensor) in the 'data model' column, not sure what the difference is between 1LQ and 1LR though.

Many many  thanks again your a legend... Skoda new to me , used to the old Citroen's !

Sorry to mention the c word in a Skoda home

@Arghhhhhelp - You're not the only ex-Citroeniste on here.

Citroeneer here too. Got to a very long way back to find drums though? I seem to recall they had all round discs years before many had discs at all. shame thy lost there proactive natty engineering spirit.

My citigo rear drums are binding too often. Last time took a lot to free them. Problem is I park on a 30degree slope, so they are an essential component in my parking and returning to car strategy.

As the citigo is the first drum brake car I thin I've actually owned... what tips for freeing, hammer I like :D

Gotta love them Citroens !

@ColinD - Plenty of Visas, ZX, AX,  Xsara and Saxo had rear drums.

Also @Arghhhhhelp  As a "freeing drums first thing" idea, try reversing; that way the self-servoing action isn't trying to pull the shoes on.

And more recently all versions of the C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo still had rear drums - got them on my 2008 C1, not sure about the post-2014 new version though?

My first two cars, both Citroens, Belgian-built LHD 2CV with heady 425cc, then Dyane6 (602cc) both were drums all round.

Richard.
