215 will have more grip in the dry but less in the wet. ;)

Unless there Falken 512's then they'll just have no grip....Dry or wet..

215s will protect the rim more as 205s are a little stretched so the outer rim is exposed

Depends on how wide your 17" wheels are: 7" or 7.5" ( like mine ).

I'm thinking of going for 225 /35 / 17 tyres next.

John.

I got my car and it has 235/35/17".. they look really great, the handeling is great as for the size of the wheels, but they're falken.. understeer is very bad lol.. on U turns or some hard corners if u push very hard no grip at all... u can see how they look like in my gallery

The best match in size to 205-45-16 is a 225-35-17. The 205-40-17 and a smidge bigger than the 205-45-16 and the 215-40-17 are a smidge bigger still and IMO bordering on too big froma speedo / rolling radius perspective, although the 215-4 does fit the alloy better (so I've been told).

Heres a table of appropriate tyre sizes, all within 2.5% of OEM (recomended)

205/45 R16 591 mm 1857 mm 0 %

205/40 R17 596 mm 1872 mm + 0.83 %

215/40 R17 604 mm 1898 mm + 2.18 %

215/35 R17 582 mm 1828 mm -1.46 %

225/35 R17 589 mm 1850 mm -0.27 %

As you can see (bold) the 225-35-17 is only 0.27% under which is better than being over as you'll be travelling a smidge slower than speedo reading, as oppsed to faster is the %age is a postive increase.

The 215-40-17 id getting close to the 2.5% max limit, and I prefer to reamin within 1.5% of OEM tyre size, but thats just a personal thing.

However that is all based on a new tyre.

as there is a possible difference of around 12mm in diameter in between a worn and brand new tyre is it really that important?

I say get 215 for rim protection more than anything else.

I know exactly what you mean and its something very few people take into account, ie if you do get tyres which are a tad bigger then 1/2 way thru the life of that tyre, i a 205-40-17 you'll have lost the excess that was making the tyre bigger in the 1st place.

so, 1/2 worn 205-40-17 will be approximatley the same size as new 205-45-16, and so on.

I think however, it something people should be made aware of..... tyres always get smaller so you don't have any speedo / camera issue, but if you happen to go too big you could get caught out!

:)

Anybody running 235 / 25 / 17 s? ;)
