Octavia VRs failed mot on rear fog lights... help....

Featured Replies

As above, put my 2006 skoda octavia VRs 2.0 tdi in for mot today... it failed on rear fog lights....

Rear fog lights wont turn off... i have swapped the switch for another and still the same...

Any ideas??

have a look at the wiring around the rear lights incase it has or had towbar electrics. It sounds like there is a short somewhere which is supplying power to the fogs when the tail lights are on.

If you can't find any wiring issues try changing the bulb holder if you can get a spare.

Saying about towbars etc.... i did peal off a stick for a caravan club.... maybe it did used ti have a towbar!!??

Quite possibly mate, I've seen quite a few tow bar electrics installed using the blue scotch connectors so it would really depend on how good a job they did on removing them, they may not have properly reinsulated the wires.

Of course I could be barking up the wrong tree and it could be something else entirely different from this but it's certainly worth investigating.

Id say it is wiring as iv just tried the light switch and a light from my other skoda and its the same.

Must be wiring somewhere...????????

That really does sound like wiring, particularly if there's any evidence (say insulating tape in mid-run) of bodge-loks ;) having been removed.

This may require a good wiring diagram, a multimeter and extreme methodicalness, or the services of a good auto electrician (to find same, visit an independent garage and ask owner or head mechanic where they send mind-stretching electrical problems to).

Have a look behind the rear quarter trims inside the boot. If it's had a tow bar on, chances are they've hacked into the nearside light loom.

Stupid question, but, fog lights, as in plural? Sure it's not the brake lights, or combination bulbs that have been put in backwards?

Hatch or estate?

I know in the FL the estate uses 21w bulbs and the canbus adjust the feed. The hatch uses 21/5w for stop and tail / tail and fog. If you have a 21/5w in an eatate it will perminantly show 21w hence looks like your fog/brake lights are on.

My two pence worth.

Mmmm, not sure..

I just put it in for mot and they failed it on fog lights stuck on.

Hatchback, i swapped the light panel from my new skoda and it was the same...

Yes, the lights are stuck in, on both sides.... just checked my other octavia and the foglight is only on the driverside.

May this mean its the brake lights stuck on not the fogs??

Your car may have had the n/s fog light enabled,i had this done on mine so it had 2 rear fog lights instead of just the o/s one,if it was your brake lights stuck on then the middle brake light would be on as well i would have thought.

Mmmm, bloody baffling me that's for sure...

Its in the garage tomorrow so fingers crossed....

bloody skoda's!!! Lol

I don't know the Mk2 Octavia at all, so I'm only going by this image I found on Google

I'm suspecting someone's put the twin filament bulbs in backwards or used a single filament bulb which is sitting on both contacts, or something similarly stupid (all of which I've probably done myself at one time or another)?

Its the bottom twin filament bulb thats constantly on....

There is a twin filament bulb in there...

there is a twin filament bulb in the bottom yes. Its used for rear side light and also fog (left if you in a lhd country and right if you are in a rhd country). Obviously do this to use the same lights for all cars.
