Gaskets and Smoke and Mirrors

Featured Replies

Well Hello!

New to the Forum..

I have noted a few posts regarding head gaskets and indicators of same with Fabia 1.4 MPI.

I too have a slow water leak, the car does about 40miles a day max and needs topping up at the expansion tank weekly. there is the residue as normal in the oil filler cap and the area inside same.

My wife broke down with the temp gauge going up and the warming going the other day and there apparently being no water in the bottom hose from the expansion tank.  I topped the water up after a short break of

about a half hour, it took about a pint and a half to get to a little below the top mark on the expansion tank. The car drove home perfectly.

The following day I noted a small patch of the creamy deposit and a little water under the car.

Took to garage, all hoses secure but the mech did say that the oil was a little high. The oil was changed and the water system flushed and replaced with new coolant and antifreeze.

The fault occurred again yesterday same fix.

There is no noise, white smoke on acceleration just the normal vapour at start up.

I was wondering if in fact the thermostat might be sticking and the main coolant NOT circulating.

Garage is very dubious about the car or guarantees on new head gasket because and I quote it has done 197,000. Well the car is serviced regularly its immaculate for its age and I personally think its worth keeping it.

I am happy to have everything checked over to confirm the issue and to have the gasket replaced and the head skimmed plus new hose sets and whatever.  I would be grateful for a heads up on an Independent near me that is a little less negative!

I am sure there is a procedure for tracing faults and eliminating them to find the culprit. I would do it but I am just a buffoon in mechanics. Surely after all the other potentials are crossed off a gasket check etc isn't that hard?

Check for residual pressure in the expansion tank first thing in the morning before starting the engine. Usually a bad sign for the head gasket if gas hisses out.
