Varta or bosch battery for my pd100?

Featured Replies

Bosch s5 and Varta et44 both have same specs but varta cheaper. Any reasons why I shoud get the more expensive one? Thanks.

I had a varta in my first fabia. Was in it when I bought the car. Owned it for 6 years before selling it. Had jumped many cars with it and never had a problem.

Mercedes also come out the factory with Varta batteries.

Both are exactly the same just with different stickers on. Buy whichever you can get a better deal on.

+1 same batteries different labels. I have a Varta ET44 in my 1.9TDi Octavia was £57 delivered.

Measure before buying, the sizes everyone recommended (think it was a 096) would not have fitted in my 06 plate TDI Elegance, ended up with a 027.

Whichever is cheaper as even a cheap one will outlast the car :)

Go for Bosch S5, great battery, 9 years in my car.

Varta and Bosch S5 are not the same, VARTA accu brand is sold to Johnson controls.

Too late!! Ordered varta e44 last night thinking they were both same on the inside. Much better specs than my current battery which I got about 8years ago with 4years guarantee. £66 inc delivery for the varta.

They sent me the more expensive bosch S5 instead of the Varta E44 that I paid for. Maybe stock issues. Im not complaining!

I think my battery may be on the way out. I've not changed it in the 10 years I've owned the car, being an "Akuma" It's probably the original one from 2004 :o So it's probably seen better days (surprised it's lasted that long). I'm wondering which one to buy, where did you buy yours from?

If it is the original, it'll have a VW group part number printed/stamped on the top surface, in my experience. Got a photo?

The battery on my previous 2003 1.9pd Superb (180k+ miles) is still going strong with it's new owner - I think these were fitted with Varta batteries from new

No VAG Symbols on it, but it does say Akuma CZ . Part number 1J0 915 105 AE.   12v 70Ah 340A DIN, 570 EA/SAE. Can't find a date stamp on it. Measuring it it's as I thought, a 096 type battery.

Not sure to replace it with a Bosch, Varta or Exide?

Just that part number convinces me it is factory original, I think, or genuine (early) replacement.

Any you mention will be fine as a replacement.

I'm also wondering where to buy one. Prices look very silly on ECP at the moment. Who on earth would pay £156 for a battery (Bosch S5)!!! However I bet they were inflated due to the Black Friday Sale event, so at normal price if you add the discount.

I bought mine from ebay in the end. Uhfdistribution is the seller name. Ordered varta e44 but they gave me the more dearer bosch s5 008 instead.

Tanya batteries is also good. Ecp too expensive.

I think they gave me the bosch s5 coz the varta was shorter than my current battery. Bosch s5 is the identical size to my current battery.

The car seems to drive much better with new battery. Dont know if its suppposed or just a placebo!

I've just been out and checked, our other Fabia (53 PD100) has a Varta Battery. I've looked closely and there seams to be a VW symbol by the negative terminal. We've not changed it so it's almost certainly the original one. It seams to be still going strong, even if older than mine (although car's done less miles).

My dad used Tayna to buy one for his car with no problems. I put the part number into google and look what comes up. https://www.tayna.co.uk/Varta-VW-1J0-915-105-AE-Battery-1J0915105AE-P9543.html A Varta Silver E44.

An update from me. I ordered a battery from Tayna, and this came.

New and Old.

Great service from Tayna, Ordered on Monday evening, arrived 10 am Wednesday, with Tracking link and 1h delivery slot.  I wondered about buying a Varta Blue/Bosch S4, but decided the Varta Silver (E44) was only £6 more and you get more capacity, 1 year more guarantee (5y not 4) and 100 more Cranking amps. All for £81 delivered. The Bosch S5 was £90.

When they were out I weighed them on bathroom scales (out of curiosity) and surprisingly the Varta was 1kg lighter. (17.6 vs 18.7kg).

Just buy the cheapest as it will probably outlive the car.

Truly this thread delivers, I literally cannot wait to see what happens next, riveting stuff.

Uprating the battery isn't something many people boast about as a modification. :dull:

Result is,  erm it starts faster.
