VRS headlights, can you clean the inside?

Featured Replies

Chaps.

Car was being warmed up the other morning and while it was, I bumbled round with I microfibre cloth clearing the Windows etc.

I noticed the headlights had a slight misting I guess you call it on the inside, nothing too drastic but it got me wondering.

So, can you get access to the inside of the headlight enough to clean it?

Don't think so, but a compressed air blowgun inserted through a bulb opening would probably dry it out if it's just condensation?

I'm guessing this is just a small build up of condensation from being left overnight.

The headlights do have breather holes in the back of them, mainly for letting moisture out, but when the weather is really bad, and for those that like puddles it is possible for moisture to get in too.

Once you are driving, and especially with the heat from the headlights it usually disappears pretty quick.

As for getting inside the headlights, it is very difficult. Some people put them in the oven to soften the glue where the clear lens is plastic welded to the backing part. I wouldn't be brave enough for that...

Remember that you have to break open the back of the headlight just to replace an indicator bulb so I'm doubting there is sufficient access to get a hand / cloth in there.

Ok guys, good enough, thanks.

I wondered the same thing,  The headlights on the vRS are dirty inside and I' wondering what I can do.  Doesn't notice in the daytime.

Just a word of warning, the oven method only really works well with butyl sealed headlights.

The MK3 headlights are probably perma-sealed rendering the oven method pretty useless. Most people seem to cut the lens off with a dremel and epoxy it back on...

Something is wrong with your headlight, show it to the dealer or check te bulb covers. Both look the same?

Slight condensation is normal (1-2 cm at the bottom) is normal but this is too much IMO.

Both of my VRS headlights appear the same as mk4's above - condensarion and dirt on the inside seems the norm. I don't really care because Skoda can have the car back as soon PCP ends, or whenever I can be bothered to VT it. In fairness the same thing happened with my previous 3-Series Xenon's, albeit to a lesser extent.

Could be a handy bit of advice but it is still only a 'probably'

Anyone tried the oven method - with/without success

or

Know for certain if it is butyl rubber or perma-sealed
