A couple of months back I could not switch off my rear window wiper. I took out the fuse and reinserted it, and this solved the problem. A couple of weeks later the problem recurred, but reinserting the fuse did not do the trick. I decided to live without the rear wiper. Then, a few weeks ago, I could not switch off the front wipers. I had to get this fixed, and a new column stork was fitted. The front wipers now work, but the rear wipers are still out of control (i.e. on all the time). Simultaneously I have noted that my rear window heater no longer works; nor can I adjust my driver's side mirror; on the plus side, the station display on my cd-radio now lights up as one would expect (previously, it was mostly barely visible or just dark). Are there any simple solutions to what appears to be a gradually worsening electrical system, or must I finally say goodbye to my ancient but fantastic car?

regarding rear wiper motor - the wash system passes through the spindle and leaks inside the motor and circuitboard, kanackering it

you may be able to rescue by removing it, regreasing it all, and trying it again, I wouldn't bother reconnecting the wash wipe system - take it off at the pump on the tank and it won't do it again

for the mirror and other faults it sound like a central convenience unit (ccu) or drivers door module fault - many many threads on here, basically involves replacing them

Is this on a hatch or estate?.

Do you have the rear wiper fuse put back in?

When my front wipers wouldnt turn off 12months ago i pulled the rear wiper fuse and it solved the fronts.

washer motor leaks can cause all kinds of strange gremlins to start running around because of the shorting out.

it could be related to or completely coincidence about the screen heater :s

Post #2 probably only applies if you have a hatch; on any estate I've looked at the washer is built into the high level brake light and a couple of feet from the wiper spindle.

If yours is an estate, you might want to check here - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/226307-gees-rs-wagon/page-5 post #145, (all credit to Gee for the build thread).

The washer line can separate in the loom by the connector valve and soak the loom as it is highly intelligently wrapped around the washer pipe.

The hatch has a similar arrangement buried in the loom in the n/s/r corner behind the rear lamp and covered by the felt arch liner trim.

The thing about this type of failure of a washer pipe union, is that even if it happened last year before you bought the car (speaking hypothetically here) if the previous owner did not take any actions to dry and protect the loom the fluid has contaminated, it will just corrode away and you end up with Jacob's coat of many strange wiring faults.

I would agree that the mirror is a separate problem probably in the drivers control unit in the door, check out Yellowcar's How-To here - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/336309-how-to-check-and-protect-your-door-multiplugs/

The radio brightness thing seems to be a weakness in the lcd panel as my one did the same when I first had it - I'm assuming it is original and not aftermarket.

I just changed my head unit and both cured the problem and brought the car up to date to handle more modern media.
