Fuel filter - perhaps never changed

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have just done an oil and filters change and we come to realize the diesel filter has either never been changed or it has not been changed for a very long time....

The filter was so dark and it had so much goo and crud on it, the fuel would not even flow through it when we pulled it out.

Now, the car feels a little more agile in 1st and second. However I am a little concerned about weather or not this has affected the engine in a bad way by never being changed or not in the past few years.

The car is 9 years old and it has 235.000 km on the clock. 2.0 TDI (BKD)

I would be more concerned if it had never been changed and still looked brand new . Its been doing it job though  it may have been struggling lately hence the livelier  feeling.

There isn't much you can do about it besides sell the car.  I'd just forget about it.

Its a PD engine and these are known to return a lot of black engine oil to the filter from the injector leak off pipes, so dark/black is normal. Provided the filter was not ruptured, highly unlikely if its a geniune oe filter, no damage will have been done. The crud etc is where it should be, in the filter, and if it was badly blocked, it would have noticeably restricted top end power.

I wouldnt be too worried, if the engine is running ok.
