Featured Replies

A bit of sunshine today and forecast colder temps from next week so figured today would be a good swap-over opportunity.

Gave the car a quick clean too:

These are the goodyear ultragrip 8 performance that i'd run on my mk2 previously. The satin black ATS fivespokes look ok i think against the primer grey? :)

Mine went on the 230 two weeks ago, dropped mine onto 17" Full Winters  ( 225/45x17 Khumo iZens )

Sorry.

Ha ha, yes he's a good looking boy. He doesn't need winter footwear though - he already has spikes :)

Looks lovely Rob. I find the Meteor Grey hides dirt even better than silver, especially the grey salty dirt from this time of year...

Slightly OT, but my darling nephew decided it would be a good idea to lob a rock at mine today:

To say I'm just a bit pi55ed off would be like saying Trump hasn't quite got 100% support from Americans... :(

Cue jokes like "oh it's gone through to the primer" and "well it needed painting anyway" etc :D

Do they paint the car as part of the first service ?

Snowflakes need to switch off now because what I'm about to write will invade their safe space and cause them to go running for counselling.

I assume you've tried to explain parental responsibility to your nephew's parents and informed them of their need to pay for the damage?

My good lady will just have to take her chances this winter on brand new Michelin tyres on a brand new car.

My old Superb got the 16" Winter Contis fitted 2 weeks ago for another winter.

One day I'm going to try All Season thes to save the hassle of changing.

Makes me want to cry just looking at that...really though the parents must pay for that if there any kind of human beings at all.

They have apologised and are mortified. They know I look after my cars, and they will be sorting it.

I would be absolutely horrified if one of my kids even thought about lobbing a pebble anywhere in the vicinity of anyone's car, but such is life.

Can't see an easy way to sort it without painting the whole quarter panel either, I guess the paint will have to be blended on the D pillar or above the window somehow. :dull:

I'm getting Nokian WDR 4's fitted to both our cars this weekend. I'm probably going against forum best advice, but I'm getting them fitted to the current rims, with a view to getting the Summer Tyres refitted next spring on both cars. My local dealer (Protyre Eastleigh) confirmed that they do this regularly with no issues, though they recommend changing the tyres after five Years, which is fine by me. I thought about new rims, but decided against it.

I've done it both ways - pro's and cons for either solution.

Swapping tyres only and keeping your oem rims means you have to pay for a swap over cost twice a year but you save the cost of spare rims. On balance i prefer to have a spare set of rims so i can do the swap myself - with a trolley jack and breaker bar it only takes about 20 mins. My winter rims were previously used on my mk2 so are 18"s, so in the future replacement tyres will be a bit cheaper than buying 19" winters i guess? Also means i'm much less likely to get a puncture as i have (in addition to the space saver in my boot) a full set of wheels and tyres on standby in the garage :) You've got the same storage issue whether its just tyres or wheels+tyres too.

I figured if i sell the winter rims after a few years (e.g. if i ever move away from driving VAG cars, admittedly an unlikely event) i'd still get say 200 quid for the rims and they only cost me 380-ish new so not too bad.

I can certainly see the benefit of a second set of wheels, and I might do that myself next Year. With regards to my Wife's car, her PCP runs out next Summer, so She might have a different car next Winter. If She decides to keep it, I'll get her some Steelies, as they are only 14inch Wheels and pretty cheap. With regards to mine, I plan to keep it for 5 Years or so, so I might save up for some 5 spoke alloys and get them in time for next Winter.

I remember the days when I used to use my dad's cars as goal posts. Cars and paint were either made of stronger stuff those days, or my dad did not mind the dents.

Skoda's water-based paint and coke-can panels chip and deform wlike no other car I have owned.

edit: My winter's will go back on at the weekend. They be Nokian WR D3's wrapped around ATS Radial 17's.

I've just switched to Michelin CrossClimates. Very happy with them and have no intention of swapping back to the summer tyres once winter had gone
