Flat Bottom the New Square?

Featured Replies

Steering wheels that is.

I'm old enough to remember the introduction of the Allegro, with its newfangled square steering wheel. BL made much play of how clever it was and for a short while the public just about bought it. Think there was a turning point when it became known that Allegros being bought to be used as Police panda cars were being specified with round steering wheels. Square wheel quietly dropped and we've been laughing at it for over 40 years.

Now, the flat bottom wheel in an ordinary road car - why? It's going to take an extreme combination of  Drivers seat at max height, steering wheel as low as it can go and monster thighs to even come close to justifying this. A solution to a problem that does not exist.

So in ten years time will all cars have flat bottom steering wheels or will we all be laughing at them. - Assuming of course that there are still cars and steering wheels.

Doesn't make much difference what shape the steering wheel is, if, as on my Fab, the clutch biting point is so high, that you bash your knee on the lower edge of the dash if you change gear properly.

Bloody moronic fashion crap, why can't they put some effort into making the basics work properly.

Turns your 0.9l Corsa into a Le Mans winning GT.

Extra 20hp and 50mph.

Recline the rear seats to lower wind resistance too

The bit not hanging down on the bottom of the steering wheel cancels out the advantage of the rear seats folded.

You have to add Sports Pedals and mats with embroidery to compensate.

(Skoda do cans of compressed heavy air for tyres & that aids cornering.)

I was referencing a vwry popular **** take about a clio thread a couple of yrs ago, it involved a blue plastic bucket FI kit and weight reduction by folding seats down.

Nit even the stig would notice the lower COG with that done...

I tried but couldn't find the link.

I really need to keep hold of these legendary threads. That one and the port polishing via a running engine and a bag of builders sand.
