Creaky Steering

Featured Replies

Can't believe its doing it again! Last time HL Gorners in Warrington had my 2005 05 Reg Octavia II 1.9TDI Ambient Hatch for 8 days (although I got a 1.6FSI of the same as a courtesy car). I bought the car from them new, now they're not on the Skoda website as a local dealer! Liverpool or Manchester here I come!

When cold and on 1st turn of the steering wheel I got a loud creak from the engine bay. When I took the car in, the dealer hadn't heard of it. 8 days later they had tried 12 of their own cars that were parked outside. 5 of the 12 had the same fault.

Skoda Technical Support got involved and eventually I got a new steering rack (under warranty of course!). This was at about 1 month/1000 miles from delivery. We are now at 7 months/7000 miles and and its starting to happen again. Has anyone else suffered this fault? Spent an hour looking through the previous threads, but couldn't see anything.

Hopefully it's not going to be like one of those inductive HT Coil/lead-thingy problems that kept repeating itself a few years ago.

That, distortion from N/S/F tweeter and engine noises from Stream CD through all speakers are starting to grate on me.

Will let you know what the dealer says

My car's almost a year old and I have had the same thing from day one. I must admit I haven't reported it to my Skoda dealer because the problem only seems to manifest itself when the car is cold and I'm manoeuvring it out of the garage. Once underway I don't notice it. It seems far worse in this really cold weather.

I heard today theres an issue with that problem, from what I hear they are working on a fix, theres been a number of things tried but it hasn't happened yet.

My first post here.

Auto Express this week had an update from a Golf owner with what sounds like the same problem. Low speed manoeuvres created a creaking sound from the steering column. Turned out to be the suspension bushes had collapsed from rust and when replaced the noise vanished. I assume the main components are the same for both cars.

Hope that helps.

Chris.

Surely Octy 2s are too new for that???

I hope it's too new for that. It was built to order for me on the first of the 06MY. It still handles well though. Still, nothing's impossible.

Just checked a previous issue and the golf in question was a brand new GTI and another was a 55 plate GT TDI. Could be worth checking out??

Took my car for 1st service about 6 weeks ago-complained about creaking steering-was told no fault found....still the same...worst when parking or over speed bumps at low speed....& they managed to wreck all my wheels(17 pegasus)when they changed the tyres.....set of new wheels on order(FOC)....muppets.....:thumbdwn:

I have creaky steering too. Having said that I have a severe problem with the car that the dealer has not been able to fix. So far it has been recovered twice on lowloader to the dealer but each time when it gets back they can find no current fault, just tell me the history of faults, I know I had them but they do not know what to do about it. The newest fault is that the engine will start but not stop. I can take the key out of the ignition and the engine does not stop. Even locking the car does not stop the engine. Not happy with the faults, when the car goes though it goes real good.

Skoda are aware of the fault and are working with the rest of the group on a fix.

Please bear with us and a solution will be made and dealers I guess will be told via bulletins.

I have been sending lots of info into a technical dept to help out, seems to be effecting a wide variety of A5 platform vehicles.

In no way a safety issue so dont panic.

Audi are suffering from the same problem, they have identified a fault with certain steering racks that have been fitted.currently we have to send a DISS report to Audi technical with each report of the fault -- they have issued a modified steering rack to rectify this fault.

The fault is an abnormal operational noise only and is not a safety issue.

The newest fault is that the engine will start but not stop. I can take the key out of the ignition and the engine does not stop. Even locking the car does not stop the engine.

I had this fault on a diesel mercedes once, turned out that the headlight adjusters worked of the cars vacum system, the pipe had come off the back of the headlight adjustment switch inside the car and for some reason this stopped you being able to switch off the engine! I doubt if your headlights are controlled the same but it might be worth investigating the vacum system!

Well, last night the car would not stop, now it will not start. Put the key in and turn, the dash lights go crazy. Have to get the AA again to low load it to the dealer. I think I have a 'Lemon'.

1) Creaky Steering

2) Gearbox cuts out and flashes all the gears on the dash.

3) Parking sensors failed

4) ABS / Skid lights on permanently and Handbrake light flashing.

5) Engine starts but not stops even when deadlocked.

6) Car will not start

I think having a new car may fix some or all of these........

Must admit, I've got creaky steering too. Only happens going lock to lock when manoeuvring.

Obviously I'll report it at the first service, but now over 12000 miles and no service indication yet!

My 2.0 TDI Elegance Estate (9 months old) has had creaky steering on low speed full-lock manouevres since new. Dealer says 'they all do this'. No other steering or any other problems. I was interested to see Lummox's comments on this thread that VAG are working to sort it out across the group platform.

I will check back from time to time to see if there is a fix, then go back to the dealers to tell them about it - cos they always seem the last to know!

Ross mentioned he had a car in like that.Lots of electrical faults. It was down to water in the E-BOX under the bonnet, causes mayhem and is quite common.

One simple fix might well sort all those problems, id get your dealer to have a look.

Skoda are aware of this problem, i have a skoda dealership in ireland the only way to stop this is to repace the PAS rack

Hi there,

I see your fairly new :) , welcome to the site from a fellow Irishman  .

Btw I've sent you a Private Message.

The dealer has ordered a PAS rack for it but it is on backorder. Apparently they already have 3 on backorder for other vehicles......

Oh joy, my 4x4's has just started creaking too. Guess I shall tell em when it goes in on the 20th for its gearbox looking at (syncro doesnt some times in 1st and a few others) along with the bloody popping stereo. Joys of owning a new model eh? You would have thought the VAG could have/would have ironed most of the problems out after a year of the platform launch!!!
