I have found my squeak

Featured Replies

So over the past week I have had to turn my radio up to block out a loud squeaky/rattle that I have being trying to locate.

Originally suspected to be the well documented glovebox rattle but after inspection and various 'test' I decided it wasn't..

After scratching my head and checking a few other common sources I struck gold...

So it looks like the offending article is the wood look trip that runs above the glovebox.. If I apply pressure to the centre of this then the rattle stops..

Horrah.... Except this piece if trim seems to be firmly attached? And being this I take it there is a whole myraid of bits and bobs behind since the airbag sits above and the aforementioned glovebox also occupies some space behind it.

Thus when I apply pressure it stops whatever is loose.

Infact it could be the whole top part of the dashboard that is loose and I have found the deadening point.

Now, I am assuming this piece of wooden trim is attached with adhesive... And although it looks firmly attached it may be tricking me...

Any thoughts or how to remove this and stick it back down?

Just to rule out the obvious

Has anyone else experienced a similar noise?

It's driving me slowly to insanity every morning and evening on the daily commute...

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

try wedging some card behind it or blue tack

I haven't taken this trim off, but all the the wood trim on the driver's side of the car is held in place with clips. Use a plastic lever under one end and it should come off vertically from the surface it's on.

SOLVED..

So with a long jounrey tonight to see the family I have decided to give it one last go and found it..

So what I found to be the source of the rattle was actually the glovebox light.... I removed the side panel of the dash that is usually covered when the door is closed as reading in this formu it could be one of the clips and there it was,,the bulb when I inspected was not attached to its mounting and was moving around freely..

I managed to get it back into the position and re-seat it...

I just been out for a quick run and the rattle has now gone....

For good measures I've put bluetac over the clips and pushed the side panel back on.

So it could have been either / or..

but cross fingers this is the solution..but the 4hours journey later on will be the real test..

That's the problem with rattles and squeaks, we think we've found them when pushing or moving a piece of trim, vent, switch etc. and it temporarily cures it.

Invariably what you're doing is masking the real source.

Finding the loose glovebox light was a real bonus, just be warned though that the original rattle may just have been temporarily silenced!

Good luck!
