Oil Change advice

Featured Replies

1.9 TDI 105BHP

I know should be using 5w30 Fully synthetic. Any point going to thicker 10W40 for a standard car with 66k on clock yet?

I have an unlimited supply of Castrol GTX 5w30 fully sythetic so I will prob just use that and change every 6 months.

Any particular filter to go for? Doesnt look like there is a return valve on any of these so any cheap one do or get a Mahl one?

Thanks

Sheldon

I use Bosch filter ECP part number 501440287 circa £4 inc. Also Quantum longlife 5w 30 but this from Audi via the Bay..

If I had an unlimited supply of the correct stuff I wouldn't see any point in using anything else.

Thank you.

Does Castrol GTX 5w 30 meet the required vw certification approval? A quick trawl and I didn't find anything to suggest it does.

I always go for a decent name brand filter.  Mahle, Bosch, Mann or OEM as saving a few pounds may turn out a false economy - that's my approach anyway. I don't know your engine spec that well, but I would of thought there was a non return valve employed inside the filter, was it an OEM filter you were looking at?

Castol GTX does meet VAG requirements and is used as OEM oil by many OEMs (Might be how I get hold of it ;-) )

The filter just doesnt seem to have a non return valve in it. If they do I would like to change for one with one. Does the Bosch  501440287 have one? Does the OEM have one?

Reading around its often in the housing and not the filter on many VAG engines, but Id like to know.

Il prob get a new pick up pipe too and drop sump as I just bought car. Any idea on part number?

OK - I must be looking at the wrong thing as when I go to Castrol UK, there is no GTX 5w30 and the GTX variants that are there are part synthetic and if you use the model finder, the castrol UK website returns Castrol edge 5W30 for your vehicle.

If you're happy and confident everything is in order, that is really all that matters.

Is your oil filter a cartridge or a filter insert to be used in a canister?

Just make sure it meets VAG 505.01 or 507.00 and you should be fine to prevent damage to the cam lobes.

Its the usual filter in a plastic top hat I think (looks like that and every 1.9 Id have before is like that)

I think I might have oil name wrong, but its used by JLR in many of their cars (all forced induction), Its Castrol stuff so its probably the edge, I will go check later.

Yes, that sounds like what I was thinking of. On your filter, maybe the nrv is integrated into the filter holder assembly? In any case, I still would stick with oem quality filters such as those mentioned in previous post. The saving to a cheapie just wouldn't be worth it in my opinion.

Cheers. Is Mahl the OEM supplier? Im not being awkward honest...... its just a pain to go to the local Skoda dealer with a GSF far closer..... or cheaper online.

Ive ordered a Bosch one........

Yes, I'd be comfortable with mahle, bosch, hengst, Mann ...

I'm fussy but not ridiculously so!!
