Recommend me a front light

Featured Replies

I recently had one of these delivered from China http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8000LM-Bike-XM-L-T6-LED-Bicycle-Front-Lamp-Outdoor-Headlight-Kit-Battery-n-/391627939421?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=hcakWJ3NnQ39ohW1dvHARDfbn8w%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Initial thoughts are very good, I've bought it as brighter handle bar light for when we are hitting the downhills, I have a 2000 lumen moon head light as well. Hopefully will get a chance to try it in anger on Thursday night, for £8 you can't really go far wrong! Unless it burns my house down whilst charging hahaha

I looked at these too, just plonked for the other.  Got a message the other day letting me know there's a delay - just my sod ding luck  :dull:

Well it arrived yesterday.

Can't really grumble for the price.

5000lm it most certainly ain't.  Nowhere near it  :dull:

It'll serve a purpose.

Underwhelmed and not one I'd recommend.

Mine arrived and I used it the other night. It's nowhere near the brightness they state, it's useful as a light on the bar to get you to where you want to go but not bright enough for fast sections.

I'm taking this bit back.

On my way home tonight, my Hope's failed about three seconds after I turned them on, with no warning.  This unit turned out to be a godsend, and while the beam pattern is far from perfect, at 10pm it was great for seeing me home safely

Needs must.

Battery terminated itself the first time it got wet in last weeks heavy rain  :dull:

I should've put some thought to waterproofing it  :notme:

Giving up on bargain basement.  Moon LX-760 ordered and on its way.

A mate has Exposure lights and they're really good too, so they might be worth considering.

+1 I've got a few Exposure lights; Maxx D, Joystick, Tracer fronts and rear. All working fine with the Maxx D the oldest at around 7-8 years old. Only a charger that failed out of warranty and replaced with a simply phone call.  Expensive but worth every penny.

Lots of people quoting lumens like others do with speaker wattage. It's not about the maximum number but the way they are focused and projected. The Maxx D is only 760 lumens which is now very low compared to the new models but it still gives a more usable light pattern than many of the chinese imports like the Magicshines even though much less power as a mate found out when out riding.

Well the Moon didn't turn up so I sent a follow up email.  It was in stock, and available for next day delivery.  But apparently is not now :dull:

And it won't be available for despatch until........ March :emoticon-0101-sadsmile:  Order cancelled and refund requested.

Now ordered from elsewhere, on next day.  Fingers crossed.

Moon meteor storm front and rear.

I've used a chinese cree led torch for years, cheap on fleabay. Always preferred lights with batteries, you can always carry spares. Personal preference is cr123s or its big brother the 18650. Modern rechargeable lights now have sufficient run times and give a fair amount of warning before the need to recharge, hence the move to the moon setup.

The other reason for the upgrade is the beam pattern. The torch setup didnt really give sufficient spread, far too narrow.

If you have any more delays etc, drop me a note & I'll see what pricing I can do for you on a Moon light.

Many thanks DPC

I've got a despatched email and tracking reference number this morning, so I'm considerably more optimistic this time.

I'll come back to you if this one goes wobbly.

+1 Moon Meteor Storm. Great light!  Moon make bloody good lights, especially for the fronts.  Planet X and a few others sell rebranded 'versions' for much cheaper but the quality control can't be as good as they never seem to last as long as the Moon ones.  I've had the XP500 and 780 and they're both worth a look too.

Take a look at Torchy the Battery Boy's ebay store; he sells some really good lights, with spares and a warranty.  I've bought from him in the past and his communication is spot on.  The Fluxient Light I bought from him is still going strong after 2 years but it over 1K lumens so I only use it for off-road riding as it would burn the retina's of drivers, at night.

Well I missed it being delivered yesterday, so picked it up from the sorting office this morning, and used it on my way home tonight

Verdict: WOW!! B)

What a thoroughly impressive light.  Good light pattern, way too bright to have on max for road use.  Feels very well put together.  Charged via the USB on my pooter at work.  Proper screw on handlebar mount, which can cope with my tapered handlebars and the light clicks very securely into the mount.  I had it on it's lowest setting all the way home, which for mostly lit roads was plenty.

I was thinking, as you (i.e. I) do, that more lumens must be better - why I was looking at the Cateye Volt 1200 and 1600's, but for me I certainly don't need anything more than this.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it wholeheartedly

I've been using a Cateye Nanoshot for the last 3.5 years. Was reluctant to spend a lot of money initially, but looking back has been well worth the expenditure. It's light (no pun!), rechargeable via USB, holds its charge well, weatherproof, and it lights up the whole road, not just a spotlight infront of the wheel.

I know the OP has got a new light now, but just for interest I have the following light which is excellent.

Theres an ebay shop called 'Ilove Torchythebatteryboy' where I got it from, but it doesn't look like they have that one any longer.  There are plenty of others on there. The guy also has a decent website with lots of light reviews.  http://www.torchythebatteryboy.com

I've got no connection to the website or ebay shop.  I just found them useful when I was looking for a new light.
