Having had both, I definitely prefer the estate. I think it looks better. I was the other way round when it first came out :D

I never understood why they didn't put a boot release on one of the spare buttons on the gearstick surround. Dads Jetta has one on the door.

A remote boot release for the twin-door might be problematic. The key will always open the boot for you, but to get the tailgate open you need

to operate both release control in the correct order.

As for looks I'm happy with the twin-door, it doesn't look like a notch-back, unlike the Superb 3.

We didn't buy the estate 'cos I was running a Mondeo 3 wagon at the time, which was a much more useful estate than the Superb 2.

IMO it's a typical VAG thing that the estate looks better than the saloon - the proportions are nicer. The twin-door has too much glasshouse between relatively short bonnet & bootlid - it looks awkward to my eyes.

I really like the the glasshouse, it makes the car look spacious & is great for passengers, 'cos they can see the outside world.

The shortish bonnet & boot also accentuate the long wheelbase look. At least the car isn't just another modern euro-box.

The facelift fixed the twindoor issues, which for me mainly involve the rear aspect.

I also prefer the twindoor now as it gets full LED rear lights, the estate still makes do with incandescent indicator and reverse light bulbs...

Actually,

Those LED reversing lights are really bright and really light up the road/car park behind you!

The separate boot and hatch switches are useful. I use tha hatch most of the time but I always plan to use the boot when headroom is tight such as a ferry or tight multistorey car park

I quite the look of it but the rear vision is still somewhat restricted (not too bad). Lack of a rear wash wipe not too much of an issue as my rear screen always seems to stay clear once moving even on my commute on mucky A/B roads

The problem for me, was that Skoda UK dropped the 2.0TSi on the facelift Superb 2.

FWIW, it was always the best engine offered, (IMVHO) nearly as quick as a vRS & a much nicer car live with.

The rear vision is as bad as most estates, but it does have very big door mirrors .............

I've always thought that about the saloon. I have the estate which is the better looking looking car but I have always thought the saloon/hatch is more distinctive and I've preferred it because of that.

Yes, I agree.  One criticism I have about the SIII is that it conforms too much to the norm.  Great for volume company car sales of course but......
