Insurance query on re-mapped Fabia

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I bought a 1 Click as part of the AMD group buy for Mrs F. It is not yet fitted to the car.

I have asked her insurer (Diamond) what the premium increase will be and they have advised that they will not insure. So, I'm not quite sure what to do.

How risky is is to drive a re-mapped car without advising the insurer? Otherwise, I guess she will have to change insurers to one that will cover. If so, I'd welcome details of good insurance companies that will cover 30,000 miles a year.

Hmm, I wonder what the position is if your insurer will not insure. Will they give you a full pro-rata'd refund?

I think you should get a refund on whats left..less any admin fees..think it's worked out in months / %.....

Generally it's pro-rata and not actually worth doing if you're nearing the last 3 months of a yearly policy. In which case I'd wait and get a quote from a more mod-friendly one.

Definitely not worth driving around remapped when it's not declared as the insurance is worth nothing if you have undeclared modifications to the car. Sorry but that's the way unfortunately :(

For those who've been following my sig's ongoing 'status' you'll spot a lot of mods are not fitted yet. This was due to a combination of time and availability, but also due to the insurance company disallowing a remap. I bought lots of stuff to go on the car and I will eventually end up with a very nicely tweaked car - not rushing it, which is annoying - but at all times I've ensured the insurance was sorted BEFORE I added stuff to the car.

It is extremely risky to drive a vehicle that is not insured according to the specifications. Your insurance would be void in an accident and you could face criminal charges. beware.

Yep........pretty good and there all listed on the certificate for all to see..:)

It does seeem to be quite variable in terms of what your quoted and by whom. Ive tried some insurers people have recommended and got some silly quotes.

Though have found that having mine superchipped has increased the premium by around 200 quid.

My primium weny up by £60 when the car was Superchipped, all other Mods no extra charge..:)

It's definitely worth switching to get cover, and you never know, they may offer a pretty competitive deal.

Not suggesting you lie about it but you could for example say that you've got a quote at your current premium already but would like to see if they can better it. Most of them will try to match ;)

(PS when you say similar price you mention that the remap is declared for that purpose of course, otherwise they'll slap the premium back up no doubt).

My premium will skyrocket but I'm just gonna suck it and see for a year. If I like it I will get requotes via Mr Flux & friends etc, see if they can do a more competitive quote perhaps :)

If you click on the word insurance , you will go to Chris Knott's advert. I found them to be very helpful indeed, and a good price too. All of my mods are declared, and i pay

Well, I will have a word with Chris Knott, Adrian Flux and my brokers, Autotorque to see what they come up with. Chris Knott would not actually insure my classic Saab 900 as it was too modified, even though they were the official Saab Owners Club insurer!! Shame that Frizzells no longer cover mods as you could do whatever you liked to your car before, so long as you didn't change cubic capacity of the engine and it did not effect your premium.

I have always declared all mods to my cars and I have had some very heavily modified ones. I'm rather surprised that Diamond (Admiral) won't insure any mods at all - very short sighted.

I might also chat with AMD to see if they can recommend an insurer. Will post back if I find any really good deals. At least I can get the 1 Click sorted and then not install it until the insurance is dealt with.

You're doing the right thing  Hope you get a good deal :)

It's not that the Admiral group won't insure mods- mine are declared with Bell Direct, and I know Elephant insure mods too. Maybe it's just Diamond- to try and keep costs down?

It'd be worthwhile adding the two I've mentioned to your list when you're getting quotes.

My primium weny up by

I pay

Got my quote today from Tesco, which was surprising as I use to work for TPF and In know they're not competitive.........

£480.25 for

Car + following mods

- Full Suspension change

- Filter

- Alloys

- Exhaust

- Re-map to 170hp

I'm also considering

- ARB

- Strut Barce

- FMIC

If I was to keep the car standard I'd opt for Direct Line as they're only £235 full comp, protected, but they're not very mod friendly, so I may have to pay a higher initial premium to get an insurer who doesn't shy away from re-maps.

So, if A re-map is on the cards, try Tesco as they seem to accept them**

:(

** make sure you tell them the power increase is approx 25%-30%

Edit - I take back what I said about DL, they've just ripped the ar5e out of the above 'mods' quote and quoted me a figure I can't really believe, £367 all in, comp, protected, etc etc, etc

They only do mods for those over 25 years old, but it seems they're out to get anyones business :D

Thanks for the info, guys. I will call around next week. Any other recommendations for cheap insurers would be appreciated.

I might try calling Diamond again as insurers have a habit of saying different things when you phone on different occasions.

Real shame that Frizzell changed their policy on modifications. Last year, I had my Saab with them for under £500 with class 1 business use & unlimited mileage. The standard car was group 17, but then I had 4 pot Brembos, a Quaife LSD, a 3" exhaust with sports cat, a remap, a sports air filter, Forge dump valve, Forge wastegate actuator, a strut brace, a 25mm rear ARB, poly bushes & 17" wheels fitted!!!!
