Bluetooth Mic problem after removing Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi All

Am hoping someone can help if possible please - I have searched around but can't find an answer.  Until recently I had a Columbus in my 2012 vRS but unfortunately it stopped working.  It has the dreaded constant reboot issue.  I also have the VW/Skoda bluetooth fitted with the microphone next to the interior light.  The Columbus and bluetooth were retrofitted after delivery.

I have removed the Columbus to see if I can get it repaired but it won't be until next year now.  As an interim measure I have refitted my original Bolero and I believe have connected everything up again but the microphone does not work.  I can make and receive calls etc but nobody can hear me.

There is a lead that previously went into the back of the Columbus but there is nowhere to connect that (I had assumed that it is the gPS antenna lead but not sure).

I have most likely done something completely wrong but can't identify what and would be very grateful for any advice/words of wisdom from any forum member as to what my issue is and how I could go about fixing it ?

Hopefully someone will help this poor guy out - it is nearly Christmas after all

cheers Folks

Bernie

You wanna send me your Columbus and I'll have a look at it for you?

As for the microphone issue, you might have a coding issue, you might have it set up for voice control and it's not compatible with the Bolero, or you might just have a loose connection on the Quadlock.

I've just had advice on retro fitting a Bluetooth kit in my yeti with a Bolero is there not a third white connecting coming from the part of the loom that leads to the Bluetooth unit.

I was told that for a Bolero the mic needs to be connected to the connector that leads to the Bluetooth unit not to the connector that comes out from the quad lock

Just to add a little more info:

When a Columbus is fitted with voice control, the microphone goes to the Columbus. There is an extra connection between the Columbus and BT module to pass the microphone signal.

Where other headunits are fitted without voice control (Bolero, Amundsen etc), the microphone connects directly to the BT module skipping the headunit.

As you mentioned it was a retrofit, the loom might have some white two pin connectors to switch where the microphone connects to :)

Many thanks folks - some really us ful info from you all. All i need to try and figure out now is whixh ate the microphone wires. I thought i had seen the connector but now believe the one I saw is the sat nav antenna plug. Will do some exploring unless anyone has any tips on how I identify the micrphone wires ?

Genuinely appreciate all the advice you have provided folks.

Thanks

Bernie

There'll be a wiring pinout diagram on top of both head units telling you where the wires should be.

Many thanks - will have a look and see if I can figure it out.

Mind you, if you'd sent me the unit when it broke you'd probably have it back by now,..

Many thanks - will have a look and see if I can figure it out.

The mic will be connected to pins 1 and 7 shown here in green: http://www.my-gti.com/1234/volkswagen-rns-510-microphone-connection-for-voice-control

The Columbus would normally pass the audio through on pins 4 and 9 shown in purple/pink.

Have you checked the BT wiring loom for any white connectors near the quadlocks? You can see them on this retrofit loom: http://www.carsystems.pl/img/products/16/6/16_max.jpg

Thanks and if I dont have any successn trying to fix it I might come back to you. However as it is now nearly a 5 year old unit its probably not worth spending a lot of money on it. I need to get the CD out of it somehow (have another post where I am hoping someone can help) and the try and reload the firmware. If that doesnt work will look at part exing it for another or new one.

Many thanks - very useful and I will have a look. I guess if i can locate the correct wire i just need to connect them to the corresponding pins on the Bolero ?

The Bolero won't pass the audio from the mic through, that's what's causing your issue.

You need to bypass the Bolero so the microphone is connected directly to the BT module.

As I mentioned in my last post, many BT retrofit wiring looms will have connectors for exactly this purpose. If yours doesn't, you'll need to cut and splice the loom which will be harder to reverse if you refit a Columbus.

Now I think I am starting to jnderstand properly- thank you for your patience. Its annoriginal vw/skoda bletooth kit in my car albeit fitted, along with the columbus after I bought it so not crom the factory.

I will look fo the connections you have mentioned and if they are not there will try and find an adapter/loom that will allow me to,connect it all up without splicing anything.

I thought I had read somewhere on ths forums that it was only the fairly old Boleros that didnt support the bouetooth mic but the layer ones did. Ut I may have got that completely wrong.

Many thanks again for your advice

Cheers

Bernie
