Couldn't get car in gear this morning ?

Featured Replies

Come out to go down town earlier and I couldn't get the car into reverse ??

Tried the forward gears and it wouldn't go into 1st 2nd or third. Only after it went into 4th was I then able to get the other gears ?

Is this normal then or not really ?

Car is a 2016 petrol VRS. Done 8800 miles.

Not really !! :-(

The car needs to go to the dealership for diagnosis and repair, so best contact them or have Skoda Assist arrange the Courtesy car if the Holiday Season is an issue for the Dealership.

They will have plenty Demonstrators sitting though, some still owned by Skoda UK, so your car can sit waiting for repair.

It seems fine now and I've been in and out a couple of times since.

I also had some slight whining under acceleration in a first and second.

It is up to you,

but if you know you had an issue today you know there was something wrong, and getting it checked out before the same happens further from home.

Gear whining is not good.

Book it in asap

This sounds like a large bill heading someone's way; get the fault reported whilst that way is still the dealership's and not yours.

Have you been going through a lot of water..? Either deep water or hit water at speed..?

One of the basic fundamentals of a motor vehicle is that you can engage the gears in order to propel the said vehicle in either a forwards or backwards direction.

I'm surprised you needed to ask but, seeing as you have, the answer is no, the behaviour you describe is not normal.

No not at all.

Only time I've experienced anything similar to this is when I'd hit standing water and got water into the clutch/pressure plate and it had stuck to the flywheel I presume, It  free'd itself after starting the car in gear and was fine afterwards, this was many years ago and not with a Skoda though and as you said you've hit no water so a visit to the dealer seems appropriate.

Cheers

Ive had this on my last three brand new cars bit only momentarily, i.e. wont engage reverse, take foot off clutch and re-engage, select reverse no problem.

Are you saying even with the clutch in and out it still wouldn't go into reverse? If so I can only echo the above, theres some kind of selector issue - get it sorted!

That's caused by there not being synchromesh on the reverse gears, so if the gears on the layshaft don't sign well enough they won't engage. Lifting the clutch allows one set of gears to rotate to a different alignment and hence will engage.
