Thinking about an Ateca

Featured Replies

I'm planning to start looking around for a new car in the new year. I have toyed with the idea of moving to petrol, but I want 4wd and DSG (or something just as good) and it's pretty clear that manufacturers are not interested in making these, at least not at sensible prices. So it's now coming down to a diesel which is likely to be a Yeti or an Ateca. The Ateca comes with the 190ps engine, 7 speed DSG and you can add adaptive cruise control. It's also getting very good reviews. The Yeti doesn't really seem to compete.

I understand that Skoda actually make the Ateca in the Czech Republic and stick a SEAT badge on it. The trouble is, they seem to have lost interest in the Yeti with the new model put back to 2018 and no new technology being added. On the other hand, I've really enjoyed my Yetis.

Decisions, decisions...

Looking on the Seat UK configurator they seem to offer a 150 TSI with DSG, but it doesn't make it clear if it's 2x4 or 4x4. Edit - sorry - looking closer it is only available as 2x4 (which to be honest would be my choice)

Well. it's gone further than thinking about it!  I've ordered a lava blue 2.0 190 Excellence DSG 4WD. Added heated windscreen, park assist, spare wheel, top view camera, adaptive cruise control and boot organiser nets.  Probably won't arrive for a while but when it does I'll check in from time to time to let you know how I'm getting on.

Sounds nice - full 'bells and whistles' and with a 190bhp TDI it will certainly shift!

Yes, nice one.

Will be interested to see how you find it.

Yep, if I had to replace my 13 reg Yeti tomorrow, it would likely be an Ateca as the current Yeti is lagging behind in many areas despite being top-notch for many years. However you can't do this in one:-

I still think you could have got a lot more in than that. In Oct last year I did two runs to collect the small pallets like you have for firewood. With seats out and a handsaw for the last two pallets to go in I did 10 pallets each run. You need to stagger and interlock them.

I used to manage 13 / 14 each run in my previous VW Touran though.

I have looked at the Ateca - and a whole host of competitors - but finally decided to buy another Yeti. Present Yeti is the right size for our needs, much brighter inside than competitors, including the Ateca - what is it with the love affair with black! Yeti design is love it or hate it style but I love it because it is different and it's shape makes use of max internal space within the wheelbase, upright rear has a lot to do with that. Okay it is not the most modern design but I am prepared to accept that compromise. New SEL Drive model  + a few options has all the toys I want at a reasonable price, after major haggling between several dealers.

Question now is whether they can get it before the new VED charges take effect on April 1st.

That would be my choice of spec.

Some folks say the Yeti is falling beyond on tech but so what, it has everything you need.

I have always liked my Technology a few years old. The problems by then have been ironed out.

How many of us use the wonderful range of functions our new technology products have?

I agree on the Ateca being typical Seat gloom in there - hopefully the Yeti will be identically sized and have a choice of light interiors and a sunroof.

Are you getting a different spec on your new Yeti? I'd have been tempted to keep the current one.

Spec I am getting is 1.2Tsi DSG SEL Drive, options Electric Drivers Seat with 3 memory function (easy when wife and me change places), rear view camera, Smartlink, Mud Flaps (rear as part of build, front fitted by dealer), Variable Boot floor - previously had spare wheel but decided I would rather have extra boot space and use AA to supply spare wheel if I get a puncture. Too dangerous to change wheels by roadside now and at 70 I don't want to be scrabbling around in dirt and rain to change a flat tyre! Gobi sand leather, Jungle Green or Quartz Grey - wife to decide! Oh and 16"  Moon wheels to be transferred from my existing Yeti at trade in handover.

Black interiors are common because it goes with everything and makes the production costs cheaper than choice.

I think it's a common belief that because it's normal, it's what the punter wants..........usually he/she is not given a choice

 I'm delighted to hear that a founder member of the UK 16" Special Build Cub will be retaining his membership! **

(The combination of circumstances that led to its formation and a final membership of - I think - a dozen will not happen again.  Time we had another check on who's still with us...)

The only 16" wheels on offer from Skoda are the Helix design (Forrest being retired), I could have had those on my new Yeti but prefer the Moon design alloys I currently have so decided to swap with the Origami on the new Yeti. I find the Origami overly styled for my taste.

Just been given a February build date with delivery early March.

I'll be 69 this year and still OK to fit spare wheel, hope nothing changes before next year.....

If you can still lift the rear seats out you can definitely replace a wheel! :)

Thanks but I am quite capable of changing a wheel - change all four twice a year from Summer to Winter wheels and vice versa. Question is whether I want to put myself into the dangerous position of changing a wheel by the side of a road or on a motorway, probably in bad weather and likely in the dark, answer is no I don't. The advice from road agencies is that changing a wheel by the side of a road is one of the most dangerous things you can do; so I will call Skoda Assistance who will send the AA with a spacesaver spare wheel, shielding themselves with their vehicle and a huge array of flashing lights they can change the wheel and I can proceed on my way. You leave the AA spare at the tyre depot that repairs your tyre for them to pick up.

Good advice.

Incidentally my other concern is changing a wheel on uncertain ground using the scissor type jack and the short wheel brace that comes with the car. One slip and you are in all kinds of problems. At home I use a trolley jack, breaker bar to start to undo the wheel nuts (always at least one stuck even after careful use of torque wrench when previously changing wheels), then a conventional spider wheel brace to remove the nuts, and of course an alignment bar for refitting the wheels. How much of that can I reasonably carry without using all my boot space - and the boot is 1/3rd smaller with a spare wheel to start with!

It's all down to probability theory.

My PDI is to re tension the wheel bolts to a realistic one after a service

They are also not likely to be doing it using a 'chocolate' wheel brace and rickety screw jack!

Precisely!

AWFabia - made alignment bar

I bought a set of those a few years ago. I was going to thread some bar, then I thought about using the studding as you have, but thought they may scratch the wheels more easily. Amazing how something so simple can make life so much easier.
