Small oil leak from '56 VRS I'm picking up tomorrow

Featured Replies

Suppose a hello is in order as I've never posted on this forum before- unless this is something serious, I'm picking up my first Fabia VRS tomorrow, to be honest it's even my first car!

I viewed the car on Wednesday (4th) and put a deposit down, higher mileage than I wanted at 97k but it was in significantly better nick than a 56k miler that I'd seen a couple hours before!

The only thing I could see amiss with the car was what looked like a small oil leak underneath on one of the pipes near the right front headlight... Looks like there's a cut out in the metalwork there for access to that pipe, the mechanic at the dealer reckoned it was a breather that had 'breathed' a bit.

Did a quick search of the forum, decided that it was nothing major, and in my haste put a deposit down.

Could someone confirm that I'm not buying something with major issues?

Below is a picture of the leak I saw.

If no one minds giving us some advice I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

It's actually a turbo boost leak I think. Yes, really, it's oil leaking from a turbocharger pipe joint near the intercooler, which is in that corner.

Excuse my ignorance, but yes it's nothing to worry about or yes it's something serious and I should walk away from the car?

It indicates that the turbo oil seals are leaking slightly, not uncommon at that mileage on the original turbo.

I've not seen the car, but if it's clean and has a checkable history I'd still consider buying it, but ask for money knocking off to fix the boost leak!

New turbo soon then?

Wish I'd taken a few more pics, had a full Skoda history, was well looked after outside and in. Needs a major service in about 5k miles, cambelt is due at the same time. when I spotted that leak I got him down to £2200. sound like a decent deal?

Whatever you do don't let the 'mechanic' at the dealers work on it if he reckons that is a breather!!

As above the turbos on these do seem to put a lot of oil out with average mileage, you will find it on all the ones for sale on original turbos.

OLD MoT certificates? Just to confirm the mileage.

Beyond that, I'd be hoping to get nearer to £2000 by offering cash/bank draft, but when they're working on the cambelt they will have to split some of the boost pipes anyway.

Isn't it the rocker cover breather putting oil vapor into the TIP which then gets collected at the bottom of the intercooler then leaks. On my old Skoda I had the same problem, did the elephant hose mod and no more leaky boost pipes.

I wouldnt worry about it

Bought mine on 126k and it had a slight leak ,now on 155k and its still got a slight leak there.

I was told that there will always be a bit of oil in boost pipes and thats the lowest point.
