EGR cooler replacement 2.0 TDI VRS CR

Featured Replies

I have discovered a small leak in my cooling system while I was driving in Europe over XMAS. Light came on after 800 miles, topped up, 800 miles later topped up again. 2800 miles driven in total - 1 litre of coolant lost and replaced. Called a garage on my return and booked it for today. They called me back saying that the EGR Cooler has to be replaced and all the electronics attached to it as well (sensors?). Quoted me 1500 pounds for the job. Am I being ripped off ?? On top of that they told me that this may or may not address my leak ...

It is an expensive part and its a good amount of labour to change it so £1500 is in the ball park for a Skoda dealer I would have said. If the car has got main dealer service history and depending on how far it is out of warranty you may get a bit of money off that as a good will gesture

My egr cooler was replaced at a Skoda dealer for a leak just before Xmas, luckily the part was under warranty,

The invoice was for the best part of £700 but that was just the cooler, there were no sensors/electronics replaced.

Have they said why the electronics need replacing?

I suspect potential water damage, however if they are not sure it will solve the leak then how can they be confident the electronics need replacing.

Have they pressure tested the coolant system to try to pin point the source of the leak?

The car is 59 plate so well out of warranty. They ran a pressure test while it was hot and pressure was dropping, not by much but it dropped. They checked the ECU and found a logged EGR fault. I do not recall having any warnings popping up apart from low coolant level. They also ran a boost pressure test and that was fine. I could not get a straight answer why the electronics need to be replaced at the same time as the EGR cooler though so I assumed it must be swapped at the same time or they are one unit ??
There is no visible leak while driving short distances, only over long motorway drives. Is it worth chucking some K-Seal in it ??

The leak on my car showed no visible leaks in the engine bar or under the car, the cooler is tucked away from sight and I'm assuming the water either evaporated on the engine or running away to a point further back.

As I said earlier my electronics/sensors were not replaced and we're certainly not mentioned on the invoice so I would say unless there is an issue with them then no need to replace, although one of the more knowledgeable guys on here may know more.

I had no lights on the dash other than coolant every week or so, but there was a fault showing in vcds when scanned which matches your issue.

I personally would not put K-seal in my coolant system, some people on here will say otherwise and have had success however it's supposed to be a temp fix.

If I remember correctly, the egr is an integrated unit with an integrated oil/water cooler and associated sensors and controllers. I believe before the controls were house seperatly and the EGR was 'dumb'

You may be right Nathanio, if the electrics/sensors are intergrated that would suggest why they were not on my invoice as the part listed was just EGR.

However if that's the case then surely the OP should not be charged separately for sensors/electronics if I'm reading the post right.

It would be interesting to see how the costs are broken down, if the parts including sensors ECT are around £700 as per my dealer invoice then that's £800 labour :o
