Bad radio reception - a fix, help ?

Featured Replies

I have no radio reception to speak of, very very poor FM but no AM at all, I am told the aerial bases are suspect, Skoda want £52 for a new aerial assembly - which for an older car of low value is not happening - so I wondered if one of these

each with suitable connection adaptors and a separate positive feed would do the trick ? If this would work can I ask is there an obvious 12v live at the rear that I could spur off ?

I appreciate any and all help, and if anyone has got either of these items in good working order for sale than don't be shy, just let me know ok ?

Get a signal amp, I have one and it works just fine.

That's what I have. If you have an aftermarket radio you need one as the original Skoda radio has the signal amplifier built into it whereas the aftermarket ones don't. There are different types of those amplifiers to suit different aerial connections. For example PC5-90 and PC5-52.

I tried one of those. Didn't work.

The only real fix is a genuine replacement aerial base. It's a common fault and that is the fix. Changed mine and the difference was like night and day.

Try online for it, should be cheaper than the dealer.

In fact, here you go: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-SKODA-ROOF-AERIAL-MAST-BASE-1U0035505F-/321974249465

If his head unit is non-standard he needs to buy a signal booster if one hasn't already been fitted. It simply won't work without it because there will be no live supply from the head unit to the aerial. If there is already a signal booster fitted (to a non-standard head unit), or the head unit is standard but not working, then yes, it might be the aerial base.

VW/Skoda etc head units have an integrated signal booster which sends 12v to the aerial. Aftermarket head units do not have this. That is why you connect the blue wire of the purchased signal booster to 12v.

It would help if the OP could clarify if his head unit is standard or aftermarket.

Apologies for the late reply, the standard unit was not getting any signal worth talking about, bought a signal boost doofah and just marginally better so tried a secondhand JVC in there today and have three ( ? why just three) FM stations and excellent CD playback - happy to settle for that  ;-)

The ebay item shown caught my attention, and when trying to order they asked for the reg number and told me it was the wrong type, they then signposted me to another genuine assembly at £53 - it's just not worth that to get a radio cassette working LOL.
