Turbo change underway but stuck

Hi all,

If you've seen my last thread, I've had some turbo woes and need to get it changed.

I'm in the process at the moment (by the car right now), but I can't seem to get the inlet manifold off.

Any ideas?

I've disconnected inlet hose, take the bolt out for the pipe.support down to the turbo and removed 5 6mm Allen head bolts that go into the back of the engine. Thanks

Go get yourself a small extendable mirror with LEDS on it from a local motor factor/home bargains etc,really useful for jobs like this :)

Woo! Nearly got the turbo out. Literally just the intake pipe going to the turbo preventing it coming out. I haven't got proper pipe clip tool to remove the clamp. so that is coming tomorrow. I didn't fancy using mole grips.

 

Oil return and oil feed. Flange bolts. Be gentle wth Ex manifold nuts. Get new bolts and gaskets. 

 

 

Yeah, definitely. Not sure how I'm going to replace the oil feed from the oil filter though. A bit stuck solid.

Turbo is out.woo! Took around 4 hours to get it out. (The turbo that is)

 

i had to buy a remote pipe clip removal tool in the end. Got a few different types of mole grips and none of them had fine enough jaws to get in and release it. 

 

Turbo appears to have a chipped blade on the exhaust side, not sure what would have caused that but a specialist seems to think something might have gone through it. 

 

Im expecting to hear back from them in the next couple of days, they said that bill is likely to be between £270 and £400. Then I got to get all the gaskets and what not from TPS, who reckon £346.

Yeah I see the bolt on the right hand side of the block as you look at it, but the feed pipe is a bit seized solid on the outlet of the oil filter housing.

 

Got it soaking in plusgas, so hopefully this will release it. I see there are two hex nut type fittings on there. Do they come apart of does it have to all come off the housing?

What bits are you getting from tps? £346 seems a lot for bits you need to do a turbo swap.

As above TPS are having your pants down there!!!

Should include a new turbo at that price. ...........

 

If you remove the low oil pressure warning switch it gives you better access to the oil feed union onto filter housing. 

The union should come undone and leave the threaded adapter in the filter housing,but they are known to be tight and you might find the threaded adapter starts to undo rather than the union.

If that happens you will need a spanner on the threaded adapter to hold that in place whlist you undo the union :)

Yeah there were a few other bits that I needed to get such as a new intake pipe and coolant header tank. Pretty much replacing everything that came off to do with turbo.

 

Does anybody know the best place I can disable the engine whilst I crank it over a few times to prime oil feed lines? 

 

Another forum is suggesting a fuel cutoff solenoid but no idea where that is.

Not necessary, just start it, oil pressure will build much faster with the engine running.

I collected the bits from TPS today. I've been really paranoid about getting everything right. So spent the first part of the afternoon getting as much info as I possibly could together into a word doc. I thought it would be useful to have the torque settings and any fitting patterns, etc. (PLEASE SEE ATTACHED) Getting the oil feed line off the oil filter housing with a bit of a faff. Just wouldn't budge. Got it off after much cussing and plusgas though.

 

Turbo is back in, although still need to tighten up all the bolts, etc. Left the rest today as the temp/light was dropping. Also could do with a crow foot set, so getting that tomorrow.

 

So far so good.
