Drawing Software / Graphic Tablets

Featured Replies

My daughter has started doing a lot of drawing on her Win Pc (using the mouse and paint ) and I thought it might be better to get a Graphics tablet and some other software . Anyone got any recommendations?

I've seen good (and bad) reviews for Wacom, Ugee, Huion and XP-Pen brand tablets  and I've seen Clip Studio Paint Pro recommended as a "starter" drawing software.

What is your (rough) budget and how large of a drawing area would you like? That in itself will narrow the available range open to you, from which you can pick to suit the wallet.

My brother started off with a Wacom tablet, which he was very happy with for years. He's using a Surface Pro now.

As it's starter kit - not too pricey as it may just end up not being used.

I dropped my bother a quick sms - apparently you'd not go far wrong with a Huion 1060Plus. Perfect for a beginner, sensible price (70 quid or thereabout) and wired so very little lag, easy to set up, etc.

He reckons to upgrade from this to anything worth bothering with, you'd be jumping up to a few hundred pounds, so it's a considerable amount of bang for the buck.

I forgot to address software.

Photoshop is the de facto standard but it's expensive and has a fairly steep learning curve. I'm hearing pleasant things about Krita which is a lot easier to pick up, pretty powerful, runs on Mac, Windows and Linux and best of all, is attractively priced at zero.

Could pick up Adobe Elements cheap enough, has the basics of photoshop but easier to use. Can spend time watching videos on youtube on how to create simple drawing etc.

I used to use Adobe software but it's got stupidly expensive and they now treat their customers as cash cows.  I switched to Affinity software after it had been recommended to me. It has since won Apple Store app of the year for Macs. It's very easy to get on with and cheap too. It is now available for PC's too now but I've not used it on that platform but I'm sure you'll be able to download a trail version.

For the tablet Wacom have for a long time been the leader in the field and prices have dropped a lot. The Intuos range start around £50 and increase in price with size and additional features. Mindbomb comment on Surface Pro's is worth taking on board if she will be wanting to upgrade computers in the near future. My mate uses one and it really is a jack of trades and very simply and fast to use.

Went for a 12" XP-Pen 03 tablet (Amazon special) and a Clip Studio (£30) and she's very pleased with the setup. The tablet is very good and the pen doesn't need a battery.
