Creaking suspension

Featured Replies

Hi folks, just wondering if if anyone else has noticed there suspension creaki g or knocking?  Had mine in at local dealer for the dreaded screen freeze on the infontaine and whilst it was in I asked if they could check the suspension out. They acknowledge there is a noise but wont investigate until i remove my VW Racing springs and put the standard back on. Has anyone else had suspension problems?

?

Did you cover any miles in your car and have creaking suspension before doing the mods?

They are right not to check for you with the new springs fitted, at least if you want it checked free under the Manufacturers warranty.

If you offer to pay then they might well check that all is well with the springs as fitted and other components.

i had some knocking sounds from the rear suspension. The dealer changed the shock absorbers after contact with the factory and the knocking was gone. took them two months to solve it with the factory on what replacement shocks to use (have no idea what shocks they put on)

known problem they said.

Yeah Bytterga that's what i was thinking. Mate had the same issue with his mk7 golf gtd. He's had 2 sets of shocks and a set of springs and bushes done. Think i might go down the route of VW RACING shocks to match my springs. Offski i haven't had the car 7 month yet but put around 1000 mile on standard suspension, was a tad knocky definitely worse since fitting springs. Didn't fancy hassle of changing back if its just the bushes or shocks

i have this sound usually on cold when starting off the drive in the morning. it goes away after that. not sure how to go about troubleshooting.

Yep mine does it from cold as well.

Took it to the dealers and, as is typical, it refused to make a single noise when on a test drive.

It seems to improve once "warmed up" so not a huge surprise but annoying none the less.

I also had my friendly mechanic look at it and he couldn't find anything particularly wrong with the springs, shocks or bushes at a visual level.

I suspect it's some sort of design issue but the local dealer isn't interested at all (no surprise) and due to the way it manifests it's almost impossible to prove.

You could try a little grease on the ARB bushes. 10 minute job with little expense but creaking ARB bushes sound louder inside the car due to their position.

Knocking could be droplinks also ARB related. Did the VW Racing Springs drop the suspension height?

Yeah they should have dropped the car 10mm but its more like 15mm - 20mm not drastic but more than enough in my opinion

That will compress the ARB more than it's designed for so would put extra load on the bushes and the droplinks. Start by applying some grease (preferable with teflon) to the bushes. Easier to do if you have small grease gun as you only need loosen the bracket, pump some grease into the gap it creates and tighten up again. This will only be a temporary measure and you would be better upgrading the bushes but for fault finding it's much cheaper.

The droplinks tend to give clonk to the suspension when they have a bit of play in them which isn't easy to detect by hand. If the clonking noise persists after greasing the bushings then you may need to change the droplinks, Meyle HD would be my recommendation or if you have deeper pockets some adjustable ones where you can get the tension just right.

Yeah mine often has a little "knock" coming from the rear passenger side when I reverse out of my driveway first thing - goes over a hump/slope and hard turn as I do so.

Can't say I have ever noticed it during normal driving afterwards though
