Looks like talking might actually result in action, but you'd think a massive subsidy would be tied to boosting U.K. production and employment.

How would that be achieved without it going to the continent?.

Of course they have, but they need to you to buy new more than they care about the environment

IMO most folk driving a ten year old diesel drive it for a few reasons............

They travel long distances and probably have heavy loads, but most likely they cannot afford anything better.........And some like them of course.

 

Petrol, diesel, Electric...........Is any one of them really any better than the others?...........Really?.. in the long run?....Not in my opinion.

And do we not already have enough fields full of cars and scrapyards full of scrap.

 

All these electric vehicles and batteries will be scrap one day, and in the not too distant future too!

I'm sure they realise the cost, but actually considering it before making a decision, I doubt it.

This might just be the sweetener that Nissan were told about and Honda and BMW / MINI,. JLR /TATA etc.

So they want me to scrap a perfectly good low mileage diesel estate for something electric in the belief it is greener to do so...   nah - I think not!

 

It's got a good many years left in it yet...   and I'd have to be mad to spend huge amounts chopping it in for something that isn't quite a green as is being made out.

No they want you to scrap a perfectly usable diesel car because it has a short term benefit on the urban emissions that the EU it threatening to fine the UK over and would also boost the economy (again in the short term) once again through new car sales.

 

However like the last time it'll artificially force sales closer together after which it'll be a bit quiet in the show rooms -

I passed a Wind Turbine Transporter accident earlier today.  The HGV slid off the road.

The amount of turbines being erected every week is unbelievable.

If people keep wondering where all the energy from wind can come from they must not of been in the North of the UK recently and seen just how many wind farms there are, and the reason the turbines are not turning or generating is not the weather rather the lack of storage or requirement for the electricity while 

the Nuclear and Gas and other generators are being used.

All owners and companies are being paid obviously if generating or not.

no they were told that the government would ensure their car prices in the EU woudl remain competitive. Now if that is what was nailed down in writing the taxpaer is on the hook for a very large blank cheque. I expect it is rather more nuanced and if the government wriggles out of it in due course then Nissan may generate some negative headlines in the UK press. 

We all suspect that,

but i suspect more than NISSAN have been given some assurances on the EV's they have in development and ready to retail.

 

Maybe instead of Scrappage money on cars the 'Hard Working Families' can get help with a deposit to buy homes nearer workplaces so that less commuting is required.

Instead of Garden Villages they get on with building estates with affordable housing near the centres of occupation.

With nuclear power, the  idea has always been to run 'em flat out over winter, and when more power reqd peak lop with wind/coal /hydro etc that's way in summer wind turbines are used more, because the nuclear stuff is being serviced /\ overhauled etc  --> that way less turbine breakdown  as they are supposedly more susceptible to breakdown!

The Scottish Nuclear Reactors have had their life extended and the operators want to extend that even longer but they could be shut down sooner than intended.

Too much Electricity is being purchased expensively while what can be generated cheaply and the customers are have already paid for building is being under used,

because Wind Farms are built and not the connections to the national grid or the storage systems.

The privatisation of the power generation and distribution system is fine and dandy until one side of 'investors' finds themselves on the wrong side of the equation at which point it's a bun fight to get 'protection' by any means including demonising the alternatives to the old established players.

That's basically what we have out here.

As far as I'm aware the transmission charges for electricity are still set to favour London. So build a power station near London and you get paid to ship electricity. Build it in the far North (where renewables work best) and you get charged a fortune per mile becasue you're far from London.

 

Maybe they've sorted that now but I've not heard.

nope, still the same, it;s one of the reasons longannet was closed down, it cost them £40M a year in charges, but if it was built near London they'd have been paid £4m subsidy per year.
