1.4 Tsi Estate hard to find - should i consider a diesel?

Featured Replies

Have a budget of 12k tops but ideally looking to spend 11k.  Looking for a manual estate 1.4tsi, se or elegance.

Finding it very difficult to find petrol models atm but there are plenty of diesels as expected.

We cover about 12-15k a year, should i consider the diesel with this mileage? I Plan to keep for 10 years if possible so i am a little concerned over diesel after its recent headlines.

Cheers

Have you tried Skoda approved there are 6 on there !!

They are thin on the ground most estate sold were/are diesel it's only recently that private motorists are becoming savvy to the downside to the diesel issues, especially at low mileage or that may occur with buying a ex company high miler where all the expensive issues will have been passed on and are waiting to happen

does the age of the car matter because upto 2010 the 1.9 tdi avoided the dpf etc maybe a mint elegance version would be more up your street, nowadays with the 6 monthly reg change all cars appear to age quickly

you may find a 1.9tdi being moved on due to age related number plate one owner low miles etc but don't hold your breath

imo you will be lucky to find a mk111 around your preferred budget 11k any ways and if you study this forum it would appear the early mk111 isn't of the same build quality of the mk11

It would appear that i need to find a 2013 mk111 with around 30k to be close to my budget. I only search Skoda approved so that i get the 12 months warranty as my luck has been shocking over the last 10 years.

I have seen the one for just over 12k but it is Denim blue which i am not a fan of, looking for grey, race blue or red. Basically i am looking for a miracle haha.

I did consider a mk2 vrs estate but read about the 2.0 tsi issues which put me off, plus i am not keen on the mk2 facelift plus i can't take the risk of not having the Skoda approved warranty.

It is going to be tough, hopefully patience is the key here.

Maybe i should consider the 1.2 tsi to keep the cost down and give me more options? Or is it under powered?

Thanks

After doing the research I decided on an Octavia 1.4 se estate, previously having a 1.4 S superb estate (too big).I agree that they are hard to find but I was prepared to travel up to 200 miles from Yorkshire in my search. I used the Skoda website and often rang garages to find that they didn't know if they had the car yet. I eventually did a deal at Newbury after a 4 hour drive and I am very happy with the car, particularly the mpg. I wanted a 6 to 12 month old one so I had to pay a few grand more than your budget but I think this one might be a keeper! i.e. keep it after the 3 year warranty has run out.

Keep looking, the registration plate changes in few weeks, February tends to be quiet for trade ins, but will be loads of new trade ins by mid March.

They won't all be at Skoda dealers so use a general car finding website in addition to the Skoda used one.   You may need to move quick because loads of people want the 1.4 petrol Octavia, but those out there are often kept and few trade them as they are so good  (unlike the diesels which get dumped in abundance on second hand market)

Had a look at auto trader and there are some just over £12k budget (which are  3-4 years old) might be worth searching up to £13k because it might just get you what you want (even if you need to haggle a few percent off).

A long shot is you might might get a cracking deal on the existing style as the facelift version has just come out. Might need to pay £2-3k more, but get a virtually new car, which if you are keeping it 10 years is going to cost no more per year of you keeping it

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be patient, ill only regret it a few months later otherwise.

Annoying part is that there was a white estate for only 12k at my local dealer, i turned it down because it was absolutely filthy inside which make me think it hadn't been cared for by the previous owner. The boot carpet was muddy and deep into the carpet. The glovebox broken etc so i passed but at the time I had no idea how rare they actually are!

Hopefully march is kind to me.

Initially I was happy to settle for hatch but imo the estate looks better and if we ever decide to have more children then it could be the best purchase ever!

Should you see any then give me a shout.

Thanks

Are you a cash buyer or finance?

Also consider the Seat Leon 1.4 TSi ST.

Essentially the same car.

Even though diesel engined cars are probably going to decrease in number in the future I wouldn't rule one out just yet, given the length of time that you want to keep the car a diesel engined version might be better than the petrol, at least for the foreseeable future and with the budget you have, you should easily find a good diesel engined high spec Octavia Estate for probably somewhere between £10,000 and £12,000, particularly as a lot of PCP deals will be about to end which will most likely lead to a lot of these cars being handed back to Skoda and then filtering back down onto the secondhand market. I can buy my car for just under £10,000 right now but looking into it, it has no easy private re-sale value, although dealers would probably be trying to get £11500 plus for it I can't even get a pound for it in part exchange after knocking off the remaining PCP balance!

It's a buyers market if you are flexible with engine choice and come March there will be a lot more good used Octavia Estates available both through Skoda and other dealerships, the used prices might well slip even further given the large number of Octavia's about to hit the market.

NO

As I've mentioned before, if you're looking to keep one for 10 years I would recommend buying a new one, with a discount on the 0% finance PCP.

Keep your savings, put some deposit in, then use the savings to pay for it.

A 1.4 TSi SE Estate Manual is £17k with discount, over 10 years its not a lot more than your paying for a used one at £12k - £13k.

Bonus being, you can chose the spec, colour, and it wont be dirty or been driven badly, or damaged.

3 yr warranty , and everything is new tyres, brakes etc, no immediate repair bills for at least 3 years, just the servicing, which I'd recommend the 3 year plan for £479, which can be put on the 0% also.

I sound like a Skoda salesman.....

haha, you do a little, a good one though!

I have considered new but 17k instead of 11 or 12k is just too much right now although i do agree with you over the 10 years when you consider warranty and repairs as well there won't be much in it.

Also, i believe they are now only offering the face-lift as new which is a big NO from me, no idea what the new front is about!

Have also looked at the Leon ST but doesn't look as good as the Skoda imo.

I'll keep looking but if anyone does see one then please give me a shout.

Thanks again

Might be worth concidering asking a garage if they have any new or pre-registered 1.4s in stock around the country.

Might be able to squeeze a little bit more out of the price as its not the face-lifted version although granted it probably wont be 5k and you will be limited to spec & colour.

There are cars still in stock and some good deals to be had.

My mate had a similar problem a few months ago as there seem to be limited number of  2nd hand 1.4Tsi around and they all seem to command a premium compared to the diesel which is very odd, considered it's normally the other way.

I know the OP says his had bad luck with 2nd hand cars but I'd still be looking at private sales for a really good deal.

I mean 2nd hand car dealers have such a good reputation ....not.

Aand they always use the best mechanics and components for repairs (there really should be a sarcasm font)

Just take a friend along with you that really knows his cars to minimise risk.

Don't let your heart rule your head or let your wife and son overrule you for 'being too negative'.

If you identify issues then either walk away or use it as a bargaining point to at least cover the cost of repair.

I look after my cars and sell mine privately and always get a a better deal than any pathetic dealer trade in  offer, but I am not greedy either.

The OP also asked whether it was worthwhile looking at a 1.2tsi. Sure why not, try one and see if the performance meets requirements.

Contrary to what you read in this forum the reality is that few cars are underpowered for more than 95% of regular road use, it is just a question of how much surfeit your environment (or possibly ego) needs.

As Gerrycan says, the 1.2 TSi is suprisingly good, I have one.

Alright its never going to be as fast as a VRs, but you can make very effortless progress, and it'll happily cruise fully loaded in 6th on the motorway, with the turbo giving you the boost to get up inclines.

Thanks for the 1.2 feedback, they seem quite a bit cheaper as well.

Just Found a Sep 2013 1.4tsi elegance in grey. 22k miles on the clock.

£12,495 from a main dealer.

Does this seem like a reasonable price?

Seems high.

If you look on Autotrader, 2013-2014 1.4 Elegances with lowish miles i.e. less than 30k are going for £10-11k

Going for a hatch will give you more choice, there are 54, only 9 estates!

There isnt a lot in the boot space, just the extra height in the estate, which I would think is more suitable for a dog.

Bear in mind the final payment on a 3yr old 15k mile 1.4 SEL estate is only £8267, so these dealers are whacking on a lot of profit.
