DPF warning light came on

Featured Replies

On Monday the DPF warning light came on, so gave it an Italian tune up as per the book, 2 hours later it came back on, so called my local dealer as it is under warranty, sorry nothing for 3 weeks, now in that time it could have gone into limp mode, so spoke to my mechanic, leave it with me and you won't have any more trouble, dropped it off Tuesday night, picked it up at lunchtime, the DPF is still there but has had surgery  and reprogrammed, seems to have extra power and a thing i noticed tonight is , it no longer hesitates when going over the brow of a hill

When you say the DPF has had surgery do you mean the filter element has been knocked out of the DPF casing so there's no longer a filter? If so then your DPF problems are definitely gone :). Unless the DPF pressure sensor fails in just the right way to make the ECU think it's blocked and it starts trying to regen on a perfectly healthy DPF, which is what happened my car...

Allegedly yes

If anything changes anytime soon with the UK MOT and equipment that can detect the DPF removal you know where to have your MOT carried out if they do MOT's.

Best not tell everyone about your helpful mechanic / dealership work since what he or she has done can land them in trouble with the DfT / DVSA.

Surely if this happened then it wasn't mapped out properly.

My DPF isn't mapped out at all. I was just pointing out another way the system can fail without anything being wrong with the DPF At all. My sensor would fail one of two ways, the first would give a warning light (Not the DPF light either) because the reading made no sense, but no other symptoms at all, and the other way was when the reading was wrong but believable to the ECU and it started trying to regen over and over again with no warning lights at all. Unless the pressure sensor itself is ignored by the ECU after the DPF is mapped out this failure can still happen. At least it was a cheapish fix (€150 total at a main dealer), but I didn't have options of leaving the car idle while I did the research, ordered the part and fitted it myself.

Right for those in the know, would a remap elevate a strong diesel smell from the exhaust, when idling, I know the exhaust is more or less a straight though pipe now, with the cat in situ.and a bit more gas can get straight out, so was thinking of a remap to slightly de tune to try and stop it

A smelly diesel is one that is not running efficiently, reducing the power and playing with the map could just as much make it smell as increasing the power although I've never had a car remapped and noticed a difference in smell.

Have you any idea what was actually done to your car? The DPF and oxidation catalyst are in the same housing so it's possible you've ended up with both being deleted, depending on the comptence/knowledge of the person doing the deleting.

If you can smell diesel in the exhaust, it means you're not burning all the fuel going into the engine. This shouldn't be happening with a decent map, with or without a DPF. One possibility is that the post injection regime used for regen is still being activated but without a DPF to regen the fuel is just being dumped out the exhaust.

Another possibility is that the injection timing got loused up in the remap - it's unlikely but possible. The ECU has full control over injection timing and quantity so it's possible for someone who's not sure what they're doing to mess this up.

All this said, are you sure it's unburnt diesel you're smelling and not just untreated diesel fumes? Unburnt diesel will come out as white smoke. Fumes could be anything depending on how the engine is running.

Its just the fumes, there is no smoke even when under acceleration, I have also checked this at night with cars following

, been onto shark, they recon it just needs mapped properly, so will be arranging a visit soon, but they are 4.5 hours away , so will wait until i get a Newcastle airport run and continue on down

Skippy , there is no need to go past Newcastle as there is a place in Ashington who could sort  your problem out , as I`m getting my cc sorted there, Energy tuneing , they have the franchise for all of the north east and scotish borders, might help you out !, on a longer journey ,
