Heated rear screen issue

Featured Replies

Hi all, so I'm about 2 months in with my Monte and I'm in the process of getting to know the car, initially I thought I was having issues with the PDC however it's just got a shorter distance to activate than I thought and I was being a bit cautious. Something that definitely is wrong though is my rear screen only half works, it looks like the previous owner was a clumsy sod and there are a fair amount of breaks in the elements too many (imho) to fix with the paint. Now I've rung the dealer and I've said I want the rear screen replaced and they are being a bit wishy washy about saying it's not covered under the warranty and refusing to make a commitment until I take it in (they are based an hour away) I'll be dropping it in tomorrow and leaving it till next Saturday. What would you do? It's not like the dealer advertised it with a half working rear screen.

It is a bit difficult for the Dealership to have picked up on a faulty rear screen demister in the time they had it between being taken in and then resold if it has taken you 2 months to suss it out.

Fair point however I cycle to work and I spotted the issue 2 weeks in and reported the issue then. Working away in Sweden meant it took me a while to get round to sorting it.

Yes, a tricky one, probably end up being how much that dealer values your custom, are they your regular source of "used but good" cars?  There must be too many used hatchbacks/estates being traded>sold with damaged rear window heaters, you might unfortunately get informed that that was a "used" car!

The 2 week bit helps then, you told them early enough, and as long as it was not you putting a bike in and it breaking the wires it must have been the previous keeper.

Nope got a rather lovely roof rack for the bike, even if I had put a bike in the boot I've squeezed a large 29er in the back of Seat Arosa, Ford Pumas etc without a scratch, too worried about damaging the bike not to load and wrap it carefully  ;-)

Well they talked a good game and they have a good rep on here so I'd expect them to stand by their product in addition it was 3 years old and 35 thousand miles so it's hardly an old banger. I've been though many second hand cars many that were far older and far dodgier than this and never once were the rear heating elements damaged.

I was kidding about the bike and rear screen, but a Warranty Manager or just someone in a Dealership might think it when they see a cyclists car and a rear heated screen not working.

3 years and 35,000 miles, does that mean it is a Warranty on a used car and not the Manufacturers Original Warranty?

Check the Service & Warranty history that Skoda have on their system and see if the previous keeper reported a faulty rear screen.

It's a 1 year used car warranty with an aftermarket warranty company, the Dealer itself is a Suzuki main dealer but they also specialise in Used Skoda. Good thought about the previous warranty, I can see if I can get anything out of skoda about while it was under warranty with them to see if it was reported.

They should give you all the information on the vehicle from the first 3 years that is on their system,

if they say Data Protection tell them to cover over the Keepers details but not the other stuff, even the Technicians name.

Okay so got word from the dealers today, they are going to replace the rear screen at no cost to me. They're also going to respray my bonnet for me for a reasonable price so I'm dead chuffed! :)

So are they getting the rear screen replaced at their cost,

and also having your bonnet sprayed at your cost by who they use or do they have a bodyshop?

They have their own body shop, the bonnet was always going to be done but probably not till the summer, so when they told me the screen would be no cost I got them to quote for the bonnet so they could do it while it was there.

Final update, picked it up today, the rear screen was fixed as promised with nothing for me to pay. The bonnet was done as well and a fantastic job was done. Overall I'm very pleased, great service from ALS Autos in Ely.

  • 2 weeks later...

Glad all was sorted in the end for you :-)
