I like these.

& Lessons there for the VW Group.

Ford can downsize engines cc's and yet increase the power and sell them while making profits on vehicles.

Not just have to big up how they will be selling EV's sometime in the future

Think VW /VAG were probably about 3 or 4 years ahead of Ford in that regard - ref Polo, UP, Fabia,Citigo and earlier models etc.

What do you mean, VW Group with 3 cylinder engines with 110 ps or so?

It's OK.....front looks sharper, rear is bland and cant stand those alloys (maybe they are growers).  TBF Im not a big fast Ford fan (or Ford fan in general) but acknowlege that most modern Fords drive v well and understand why they get such high prise from that angle.

Be interesting to see what that 1.5 EcoBoost engine is like......sure it has more power.....but less capacity, one less cylinder......cylinder deactivation.  It might have more power out of the box but I cant see it being quite so tunable as the outgoing car.

That power out of a 1.5 3 cyl takes some significant fuel rail and turbo pressure.......real world MPG and longer term reliability might suffer too.

All ifs buts and maybe's of course.

About the only Ford that does interest me and would like to own is a Mustang 5.0 GT......shouty engine, not so shouty exterior....alot of proper car for frankly not alot of money.

The 1.5 is a 4

So will it be offered with a Mountune option at launch, in a year's time? Another year to further develope the power unit I guess.

Every press release so far has said it will be using Fords 'new' 197hp 3 cylinder engine...take from that what you will :-)

The coming to a VW soon 1.5tsi is a 4 cylinder turbo, i thought that was what Ryeman meant.

The engine coming to the face lift Skoda Rapid is not though sadly.

Just the last of the downsizing that the VW boss must have meant was about VW's.

?

Which 1.5 were you talking about dropping here or was that a typo and 1.4?

The 1.5 EcoBoost we have/had is a 4.

I'd be surprised if they went to a 500cc cylinder capacity for economy/emissions reasons and for relatively small 'performance' production numbers.

Sorry George I have probably confused matters.  By my comment I was referring to VAGs recent decision to move away from development of smaller capacity "EVO" TDI (I believe a 1.5 namely to replace the existing 1.4 and 1.6's) in place of small capacity TSI's mated with 48v mild hybrid motor technology.  Understand the cost of producing diesel motors that continue to comply with regs is becoming harder and harder to do for the smaller models particularly as the engine cost eats into the margin set for each model.

Likely to see it first in the Mk8 Golf when its finally released but vehicles like the Polo and Passat will likely follow the trend.  Thats what I meant.

Sure I read by comparison that the current 2.0 TDI has a long life ahead of it, because the motor development and production costs can be absorbed easily into the platforms they are to serve.

I understand Ford have a 1.5 4 cyl Ecoboost thats seen time in the current Focus and Mondeo, but this 3 cyl version is something different...perhaps its replacement.  Unless of course the press info is wrong, could well be.

Brimma,

Many thanks for your support to the thread, as you outline and recognise, 4days is a very long time on this site and in the Automotive world

All constructive support and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

How do you get an acceptable idle with one deactivated or is that not an issue at all?.

One specific cylinder or a rotating system I wonder.

Was hoping to get the new fiesta when my pcp deal ends on my current fiesta ST. Not a fan of the back end and those wheels arent my thing, swear they similar to ones on a corsa??

'Electronic Sound Enhancement technology', what a load of crap :(
