48 Volt Systems

Featured Replies

For years there has been talk of 48 volts ........where does it fit in?.

The Bentley Bentayga uses a 48v electrical system for its electronic anti-roll system. I wonder if the Lamborghini Urus will do likewise? I think Mercedes are also due to take advantage of 48v too. Presumably it means smaller, lighter but more powerful electrical components. Handy for electric superchargers and the like.

Time might be running out for widespread use perhaps

Big ol' lead acid batteries will be getting heaved for Lithium Ion or LiPo in the mainstream soon anyway to reduce weight. They might well up the voltage at the time. Surprised it's taken so long tbh.

That's what I thought re taking so long.

48v systems are being used for (as said) things like active anti roll bars, chassis control systems, mild hybrids and electric turbo/superchargers in conjunction with the normal 12v systems. We make a lot of the chassis control components for the likes of VAG etc like the active anti roll bars used in the Q3/Q5 etc

lots more to come as well in the future......

I'm surprised they're hanging onto the legacy 12 V battery and starter if they're worried about packaging and weight.

I'd guess it's legacy components, the ICE, lights etc making it worth hanging onto the 12v. Maybe if you're having to use buses and transformers anyway for 48v suspension and Xenon lights it's cheaper to step up for those few tasks then to step down for others.

Too many issues changing the architecture back from 48v down to 12v if they do that, plus the 12v system is quite lightweight anyway. The 48v system usually charges via regenerative braking/normal 12v system. I have a diagram somewhere in the stuff they send us

VAG will introduce 48v electrics in the Mk8 Golf as the smaller diesels are to be ousted in place of small capacity TSI Mild Hybrids.  Mostly to do with the development and production costs of TDI motors for smaller platforms not being cost effective anymore....because of course the technologies required to make diesels ever cleaner are becoming ever more complex and so expensive to design and implement.

It'll gradually work its way through the other VAG marques in this respect.

Production costs have little to do with it, they evolved the engines that do not get anything near the MPG's even if they use all the tricks they can to meet the low emissions.

VW Group are caught out, No more Das Auto and no more C02 Irregularities / Implausible testing results.

So Alternators / Water Pumps / Starter Motors and Electric Superchargers that are units that do 2 or 3 functions and are weight saving.

Until downsizing can get going again VW say Downsizing has ended.

Vorsprung Durch Tecknik.   Shovel them Sh!te and keep them in the dark.

What did they do to you?!

Hating is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to suffer, don't you know?

Nothing, worry about others i will get on just fine.

You stay a fan boy and keep believing their spin. Soon the honesty they speak of might become the truth.

You must admit surely they are a greedy coning company that hear, see and say no evil and take the pith when they can get away with it.

If they just admitted when the design and build lemons on occasions it would be so much nicer and then they could have a real reputation for reliability.

eg,

VW never admit to rust being an issue and then Skoda do likewise. Everytime a known issue happens again the VW System is make customers jump through hoops.

Sure, but why bang on about it every two minutes of your life?

As for 48V systems, just to make my input worthwhile, a bit overdue, looking forward to them. :)

We have had threads running on it last year, it is all very positive and many manufacturers are going with it.

I posted in those threads, here all i said was that VW is not stopping small diesel engines because of production costs.

The Factories are build already for Audi and the Electric Superchargers, only they VW Group were going bigger engine diesels,

then September 2015 happened.
