An illuminating question (bulbs)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Does anyone know of a supplier on ebay who stocks LED side repeater, reversing lights, rear light and number plate bulbs that will fit the Mk1 Fabia estate? I had some for my old Audi and they were a great improvement! Are the all-in-one LED number plate units better than just the bulbs on their own?

And what headlight bulbs fit the Mk1 Fabia (And are they hard to fit?) I had Osram Nightbreakers on the Audi.........

Many thanks in advance :)

Halogen headlight bulbs are...

Dipped beam H7

Main beam H3

I have Osram Nightbreakers in mine.

The battery side of the car is tight for space but mine has a removable battery box front cover which slides out upwards and gives enough room to get to the bulbs.

Worth mentioning that the tail light bulbs are double filament as one of them also serves as a fog light. They are offset pin bulbs (566) 21/4watt. You would probably find it hard to find an LED bulb that would fit that criteria, but I stand to be corrected.

Thanks, TMB. What do you mean by dipped and main beam? I think I just bought the H7s for my Audi. Are the indicator bulbs hard to replace with the light in situ? Cheers :)

Dipped beam is the normal headlights you drive on and main beam is the dazzly one :tongueout:

Front indicator bulbs are easy to replace. Just twist the indicator bulb holder to remove bulb.

Thanks TMB. I did replace my indicator bulbs for the chrome ones - a big improvement. I also had a look at whipping out the battery cover on my car, but it seems to have a lot more clips and wires than the one in the picture......

Yeah mine is only a basic model, so probably has less gubbins around there. The battery box can be removed after removing the battery. It's just bolted down.

Cheers, TMB? Will I need to sort out any electrical gubbins after taking the battery out? Many thanks ;)

Mine loses its one touch electric window functions after battery removal but there is a procedure to reset it.

Right, I've just changed my 'dipped beam' bulbs to Osram Unlimited Nightbreakers - and here's how I did it (might help others with the very cramped PD 100 layout)

First off, I completely removed the plastic trim from the back of both lights - this allows more room to work.

The trick I've found that gave me just enough space on both sides to remove the bulbs was to unclip the wiring and tuck it out of the way. The bulbs can then be drawn out at a slight angle and swapped over.

I'd like to swap my sidelight bulbs. What type are they, and how do you get the little buggers out? Can you get ones with the same type of light colour/output as the Nightbreakers? Thanks ;-)

Sidelights bulbs just pullout from the back of the unit just give them a good tug.

I used cool white leds with my nightbreakers, the blue tint when the nightbreakers are off matches the blue colour of the leds, and when they are on you cannot see the colour of the leds anyway. Don't spend money on the sidelight bulbs, ive tried 70p ones and they last just as long if not longer than the £10 set ive recently just binned.

I've never bothered replacing the tail light bulbs for leds due to the potential legal issue with it especially if for example your brake lights fail or are not bright enough and you are in an accident. I did use LED plate lights but found everyone kept saying they flickered and flashed when driving, tried a number of different ones and they all went the same. I got bored of constantly replacing leds so just went back to standard. Only modified bulbs I have now are the headlights which I have 5000k HIDs and they are amazing at night, cannot believe how bright and focused the light is.

Sidelight bulbs are 501 W5W

Thanks (and to TMB for the type of sidelight bulb) Where did you get your cool white LEDs from, clarendon? Are LEDs legal to use as sidelights?

I bought mine from ebay i think, just a pack of 10 cheap ones ive been using for the past few months, have them in the interior lights as well. Yes they are legal there are no real laws regarding sidelights as long as they are white of some sort.

LED rear lights and brake lights are certainly illegal so wouldnt go down that route.

because they are led and not approved to work with the headlights as they were designed, but theres nothing to say you can't use them, they're sidelights and providing they are white you won't have a problem legally.

Well, I've ordered them. Just hope I've made the right choice - thanks for your help, clarendon.

they should be fine, hang onto the receipt tho as you may need that warranty

Don't forget with them being LEDs that they usually only work one way around in the holder.

Do the Osram 501s tend to burn out quite quickly then? And is it a case of popping them in the holders, then trying the lights before putting them in for good?
