Recent reduction in fuel economy?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've experienced a reduction in fuel economy on my 2010 1.2tsi 105.

It started around November of last year, and went from me usually seeing 45mpg to now being 35 to 40 at best.

Nothing had been done to the car but things I've tried since which have caused no improvement are:

Checked tyre pressures.

Full service inc. iridium plugs.

Full bottle of Redex in a tank of fuel.

Currently running redline si-1 in fuel.

The car runs and drives well, no engine management lights etc. The old plugs all looked good and the coil pack and HT leads are under 2 years old.

Is there anything else I can check? I have a basic obdII scanner.

Cheers

Dave

Now that it in March the winter spec petrol will not be getting delivered to the filling stations, it started being delivered in October, usually in Scotland and the North of England earlier than in the South of the UK.

So watch and see if you notice any difference after filling up a couple of times.

?

Where do you buy your petrol, ie which brand?

Have you checked the Air Filter and did it need replacing, a dirty one can affect MPG quite a bit.

I've had the car nearly 4 years now and haven't experienced a drop in economy like this before.

I get fuel from whichever filling station I'm near when running low, so a mixture of supermarket and shell, esso, BP etc. But no improvement.

Are there any sensors which might be worth testing like MAP sensor?

I replaced the air filter in November even though it wasn't particularly dirty.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the correct filter in and the airbox sealed since that was when you noticed a drop in the mpg?

The servicing items come to mind as being an issue.

How many miles has the car done and was the gap checked on the spark plugs before going in and not just taken as being correct.

No change in tyres?

This and next month as the Summer spec petrol is in the filling stations might show an improvement to your MPG.

I would give the Red-x a miss....

Maybe better paying an extra £2.25 or less per tank and put in Tesco Momentum 99,

or even Sainsburys Super Unleaded (97 ron)

Sorry, the service was in December.

Tyres are same as before the drop.

Car sounds and runs fine, but I'll check for air and boost leaks when I get the chance.

It's covered just over 60k and had a new timing chain about 2 years ago.
