clunking noise

Featured Replies

Hi Fabia drivers!

I have a month old Fabi estate. When I park the car and get out of it, I hear a clunking metalic noise from underneath the car. Has anybody eqperienced simular issues with new Fabia? Is this something to worry about? Or is this normal for brand new car?

Thanks and Good Day

Hello, for me the situation is the same. Mine is 66 kW, also estate, and when I stop something ticking under the car. I looked underneath and it seems to me that the noise coming from the catalyst.
I will follow with interest the theme.

Think you have answered your own question. When metal heats up and cools down it will expand and contract. Its the exhaust system you hear doing just that.

My Fabia Monte Estate has the same metallic ticking sound as it cools down, it's perfectly normal, it's just the exhaust system contracting. We had a Peugeot 306 XSI that did it like crazy and my Mazda 2 does it even more. Sometimes 10 minutes later in the summer after driving, you still hear the odd, plink, plink, plink.

You might notice when slamming the rear doors a clunk from the rear wheel arch, I think there's a cabin equalisation valve around that area too.

Jerc, welcome to the site. Yes...you may sometimes notice a clunk as you close the driver or passenger doors. This, as Jedispooner is saying, is the air pressure equalisation valve at the rear of the car. This lets out excess air pressure as you slam the door allowing the door to close more easily. Closing the door more gently produces a much quieter clunk or no clunk. In reality, the valve is a flap and it's this flap that you hear opening and closing. Loud ticking noises after a 'hot' drive is the catalyst cooling down

. . and it's there to remind you that if you park on long dry grass your pride and joy will self-combust!

VAG call it a 'feature'

To the OP, is it not just the rear disc brakes moving a bit that you are hearing - providing that you have rear disc brakes of course!
