Octavia mk1 L&K 110bhp.Turbo destroyed itself

Featured Replies

Hi all. I had unfortunate event of my turbo destroying itself. On  the bright side I managed to stop the engine from running away and becoming siezed or exploding . I've fitted another turbo, cleaned out egr, manifolds intercooler and pipework etc as they were full of oil. It's all back together, starts instantly and idles perfectly. It revs right round and you can hear turbo spool up. At first there was loads of smoke but I'm putting that down to oil deposits from turbo blowing. Smoke virtually gone  after driving around my estate a few times.

My issue is that although it idles and revs perfectly when stood still. When driving it just feels flat as though there's no turbo on it. I can hear the turbo but I am not getting the kick you would expect. My father was watching me drive it around and he said he could hear the turbo as I accelerate. I was told to take out and clean the MAP sensor on top of the intercooler. I did but it made no difference. Would the MAP cause this issue if it's knackered. Is there a way of checking it. Oorrr does anybody have any ideas of what else I can check.

We've had this car pushing 14yrs and its been fantastic. 125k and this is the 1st time it's broken down and needed to be towed. Can't bring ourselves to get rid of it yet.

Thank you in advance if you have any ideas for me.

Was the actuator preset on the new turbo? Or have you had to touch it?

Hiya Saints92, the turbo was donated from a known good running car which had been crashed. Good point though as I'm not sure what model or bhp it's off. I'll compare the actuator settings with my blown one. Thank you.

These turbos have a habit of the vanes sticking in the turbo. Check for fault codes for overboost. Also make sure all vacuum pipes are connected.

Hiya simspj.. Will go over it all again to Double, triple check. Thank you

I'm not trying to be funny here, but you have drained the intercooler?

Hiya KenOneill.. Yes mate I have drained and cleaned it out. Got  well over a ltr of oil out of pipework and intercooler.

Did you replace the turbo oil feed pipe? A partially blocked pipe could have caused the first turbo to fail and the turbo noise on the second one a further indication of oil starvation. Worth checking, even if this is not the problem.

Pikpilot I didn't replace the oil feed pipe and I'm pretty sure it's clear,  but again I will take it off and double check. The turbo on now sounds like a a normal turbo. I knew the blown turbo was worn but idiot me let it go too far. Thank you for your advice
