MFSW Retrofit (finally!)

Featured Replies

Today I learned several things. Firstly retrofitting a MFSW and higline controller is not difficult. Secondly, I had a mare trying to remove the airbag. Why, because I forgot that the steering wheel can be adjusted! The initial problem was that I couldn't get a screwdriver behind to release the airbag. Once adjusted the steering wheel, no problem, my bad!! Thirdly, I couldn't get the controller off. Found the small T8 fastner at the front, but had a bit of a faff trying to release the two plastic locating lugs on the top of the unit. Once I checked the replacement and realised that you only have to push them slightly to disengage them, all was well. Fourthly, how much your heart rate can go up from doing somthing so un-physical, my heart was in my mouth once all was reconnected and it was time to reconnect the battery. In accordace with Haynes and advice on here, insert key, turn on, connect positive terminal and finally negative terminal, and........... things go click, re-energise central locking and everything else and all was well, phew! I had disconnectd the battery last night so at least 12hours passed to discharge any power/static. Possibly too careful, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and it was my first time working with an airbag.

The controller was from China, will keep an eye on how things go as I was concered that it was a cheap copy. Before fitting, I gave it a damn good eyeballing in comparison to the one fitted. If I hadn't bought it myself, I would not have thought it anything other than a genuine VAG item. The quality of the molding and connectors was identical to the original. I know it's whats inside that counts, but are genuine ones manufactured in the far east anyway?

The right hand buttons on the MFSW currently don't do anything but that's because I don't yet have a maxidot MFD, sorry, have one ready to fit, but but need to get across to Eddie over in Gt Yarmouth for him to do his magic, currently, only work getting in the way!!, all the buttons illuminate correctly as well.

The only fault indication was the steering wheel position indicator. Checked all external light indications before driving and within 50metres the light went out, so all good.

Many thanks to Wavey davey for the mfsw, loom and airbag, and all the info published throughout the forums on here. It's taken me ages to get round to this but glad I've finally done it.

Well done
