VRS 230 Oil Usage

Featured Replies

Just had to put in nearly a litre of oil at 8765 miles. Is this normal ?

Sounds within limits

Keep an eye on it instead of waiting for the light

Normal if you never checked the level when you got the car and during the first few thousand miles and topped up if required and this is the first you have.

Did you check cold or at Normal Operating Temp or both.

'Do not overfill'.

Checked and topped up at normal operating temp.

So how many miles covered since you last did the same?

I have a day off of work. It's the wife's car so thought I'd check. Light hadn't come on but oil level was just at bottom of cross hatched portion of dip stick. So topped up to required level with Quantum Longlife III

Sorry you never answered, have you checked before, & how many miles ago,

or is this the first time a Low Oil light / Message has appeared?

The car has covered 8765 miles. We purchased the car at 4500 miles 3 months ago. The oil light didn't come on but I checked today and topped up to required level. I've checked on a monthly basis and this is the first time I have noticed that it was low.

Sorry, i missed that post.

So was it a demonstrator ' Skoda Approved Used Car',   Did you dip it then at Normal Operating Temp to see the Oil Level was correct when you bought the car and was it then as you have topped to now.

Sorry for being repetitive, but often that can be the Issue, as well as Dealerships ticking the Serviced' Workshop checks done.

Sales Staff  run demonstrators like they tell customers sometimes, 'No need to run in they say',

funny thing is that the Manufacturers give different advice, including checking oil etc, first 5,000 km etc.

Just Skoda Employees know better, never read owners manuals, poo poo internet forums etc.

Hopefully your oil level and use will now be as it should be, topping up just an occasional thing.

I would get off Variable Servicing though if it is set for that, Oil changes at 10,000 miles or less.

Yes checked at normal operating temp the day we picked it up.

Good.

Did the Sales Executive or anyone say the Serviced it or changed the Oil before you collected, or what does the Service Indicator show?

I would get an Oil & Filter change done at 9,400 miles or 372 days or sooner since the PDI & then stick with Annual / Fixed Servicing.

It hasn't had an oil and filter change since new. I have owned VRS's since 2002 and always service at 10k miles. Our MK1 uses nothing between services. Our mk2 we had used loads will have to monitor this beast and see if she's thirsty or will settle down.

George, Is it safe to add cold oil to a hot engine ? or do you check when hot, fill when cold ?

It makes most sense to check and know where the oil is 'Cold with vehicle on the flat'.  When you get a vehicle.

Then do the Manufacturers Oil check, with VW that is nearly always 'At Operating Temperature & wait a few Minutes'.

Translation from German, Spanish CZ can have that as 'Warm', Hot etc.   Only the 44kw engine is checked 'Cold' i think.

So know where the oil is when Cold, then after doing a run and getting the Oil Hot, know where that is.

Then you should not need to be topping up when you have a hot engine, but if you do be careful.

Because you know the Cold Level, you can be sure the oil is correct before heading to Weddings, The DISCO, Dogging Spots etc.

USA VW Official video on filling oil after checking says Engine at operating temperature.

(but then they would have you running off to dealerships.... Remember if a Quart is Quarter of a US Gallon it is not a Quarter of a UK Gallon, maybe Quarts are 2 pints like i was taught.)

**UK VW Oil Video forgot to mention engine oil temperature,  and as to the UK lady, no thanks..**

So.

Dogging

I will be sure to check before I venture to such places !

I had a note put on my 220 TSI service request to check the oil level before it was changed. They asked me how many times I had topped it up, I said none as I had never had to top up the engine in a brand new car.

Like you mine was approaching the hashing on the stick after 7k miles in 12 months. Car came back with the page from the manual photocopied and highlighted which states skodas position on oil usage. Apparently it will use a bit more when new and then after that acceptable use is 0.5L per 1000km. Or half a litre per roughly 600 miles. At 8k miles thats 6.6 litres of oil to be drank before Skoda consider it abnormal use.

I dont know how they make this stuff up and get away with it! The fuel economy figures are more reliable.

I did ask them if I needed to top up by 5 litres throughout the year then why do they bother changing it? Its always fresh!!

Im not sure what the difference is between the top and bottom levels, I wouldn't expect it to be that much?

Usually 1 litre to to bottom.

what oil should i get for my 220 tsi? i fancy having some already in the car in case i need it

5w 30 Full Synthetic Long Life VW 504 00

.........

As to the 'May use as much as 0.5 litre 1000 km (621 miles)

VW have that said for Petrols & Diesels, from 44 kw Up,

3,4,5,6,8 & 12 Cylinders, and it is guff.  They can say what they like a Court can tell them you are having a laugh,

Green & Economic fuel use and oil added at a greater rate than with a 2 Stroke.

They put in the various stuff on Towing over High Mountain Passes in Summer etc,

well driving to work in the UK is not usually some extreme of altitude or weathers.

Or some use of lowest quality or Octane / Cetane fuels.

....................

1 Litre top to bottom of cross hatch,

well maybe with a 2.0 litre, but check your self,

Because the same types of dipsticks are sometimes in other engines with Oil Capacities of, 2.8, 3.6, 3.9, 4.2 & 4.6 liters

and the Area A, B, C or cross hatch is not always 1 litre difference.

& with a 1.4 TSI with 3.6 or 3.9 litres of oil, the oil maybe be 1.5 litres low and still no low oil light  / Message might show.

Quantum longlife III from TPS. About £6 for a 1 litre bottle

I recently bought 5L of genuine VAG oil (5W 30 VW 507 00) for work cars, from Horton Skoda through eBay for £35 delivered which I thought okay?

We have the following VAG cars: Passat 177 TDI CR, Superb 140TDI CR, Leon 170 TDI CR, Leon 184 TDI CR, Octavia 184 TDI CR, Alhambra 140 TDI SCR, Golf mk7 GTE (1.4 TSI) and Ibiza 1.2 TSI, looks like it will be ok to use to top up all of these?

Yep, I had to have the dealer do this too.

mine has 28k miles on it now and is one year and one week old..  it's needed litre of oil pretty much every 7-8k miles.

whilst this is more than the last vrs (a mk2) its within the spec that vw/skoda quotes and nothing to worry about IMHO.  the first vrs i had, also a mk2, used oil like this too but the GTI before that didn't - just down to each engine i think.

SIMPLY CLEVER,  check oil on a regular basis like you should check tyre pressures and then you might catch the oil when it is 0.5. litres low and not 1 litre low and doing an engine no favours,  oil being a coolant as well as a lubricant.
