Creaking Tailgate?

Featured Replies

Has anyone encountered a creaking tailgate on a Fabia VRS (irrelevant I suppose) hatch?

Only recently noticed it.

Anything to have a look at?

Yes,

the hinges and hinge pins. lubricate.

The hatch rubber seal, use Bumper & Tyre renovator or similar or silicone spray.

As Awayoffski says, silicone spray and oil. Cured mine from creaking in seconds and it now opens a lot faster too.

NOTE - However - Do not Repeat do not use an aerosol spray on the boot gas struts.

What I found on daughter's late 2009 Ibiza SC was, rusting on the body mounted ball swivel for the gas strut, took the strut off and cleaned/greased both sides, sorted!

I never had that on my wife's September 2002 Polo over its 13 years with us.

2ndskoda, what was the issue with spraying stuff on the gas strut, just out of interest?

Seals and products that can degrade them.

If you really want to use lube on rubber like i suggested with the Hatch seal or door seals or light seal / gaskets,

brake or door gussets it should be Red Grease, but that is expensive and then messy if you are just wanting to stop rubber door seals leaking or the H20 freezing in winter.

Hi Rum4mo

Its a thing from the past when I was in the trade. Some of the older aerosol 'lubricant' sprays could literally destroy gas struts in seconds.

I once watched a colleague use a spray on gas struts, and almost immediately they let go and the boot/hatch fell down upon him. When you see that, you never forget it.

It may well be that today's sprays have different contents from the older ones BUT best to be careful. I am aware that many people keep aerosol sprays for years and years tucked away in their garage, hence my caution

Yea mine is creaking, I'll try the hinge lube method tomorrow

It's just all the Road Grime/Crap from the road's over the winter period getting into the hinges!

My Greenie Estate does it too! Just add WD40 (other spray lubricators are available :D ) or Grease/Vaseline to the hinges works a charm!! :)

WD 40 (quick fix) the Original stuff not the proper Lube WD 40 can be the spawn of the devil.

Leaving surfaces unprotected after a short period, just check out pushbikes / chains left outside or even in after someone sprays WD40 rather than a good oil or grease or dressing.

Tried lubing up all the hinges and joints etc and doing the seal with some renovator.

Still creaks like mad

Its the only thing that grips my.... anyway

Anything else to try folks?

Did you not do the struts like mentioned above, the bit that pushes out and holds the boot open.

Do the actual inside but as well, not just the joins where they attach to the boot. Both my Fabias have been the same. It's the shaft bit as it slides in and out of the gas strut.

Ahhhh right got you..so what's an ideal lubricant to use Rich?

I didn't have any so rubbed a little bit of general purpose grease on them and opened and shut the boot a few times. Possibly not the best thing to use but must have been over a year now and it's still fine!

Ah that will do for me mate

I'll have a whirl on Saturday when I do the sound deadning

Check it's not the support ropes for the back parcel tray creaking where they loop over their plastic supports on the hatch - they can get quite noisy

Stone monkey makes a very valid point. Do not neglect this little tip.

....Also that the boot latch mechanism is locking/clamping properly and not causing the rattle. Could be mis-alighned!

Everything seems to be lubed up and aligned but it's still there....

Only thing I haven't done is take the rams off and grease there pins.

Might be be the only thing left to creak!

Maybe it's your joints as your opening and closing it that are creaking? ;)

Well, when you take them off, if the creaking stops then you will know if they  are the cause if it does not creak without them fitted. If no creaking try fitting them one at a time too to see if it's one or both.

The tailgate  will be heavy mind!

Yeah they are heavy.

i don't think people know how heavy they are until the struts fail or they do the above!

Yeah. Tailgates are heavy bits of kit !

Ill let you know more tomorrow

my vrs creaks at the rear.i've found that the creak is coming from where the rear parcel shelf clips onto the side panels.i also had creaking from the rear seat latches.
