Skoda Fixed price service

Recommended Posts

Air Conditioning + Brake fluid change £89.

Just booked at my local Skoda dealership garage.

Think it is good value, in case someone else would interested as well.

Good price, should normally be...

Air Con - £75

Brake Fluid - £52

There is mention on the major/larger service that gearbox oil will be changed if required, that would make that very much a bargain as DSG oil change is about £180 on its own. Has something changed with Skoda fixed price menu pricing etc ?

According to the two Skoda dealerships near me, the gearbox oil is considered 'sealed for life' and should never need changing.

This despite the fact I offered to pay for it to be changed ; "it doesn't need changed. Save your money!"

Almost all manufacturers claim auto gearbox oil is sealed for life.

Unfortunately 'life' for them is the length of the manufacturers warranty.

If you want your gearbox to last as long as possible then ignore the 'sealed for life' claim.

Any dealer that tells you to save your money should be avoided too.

Check / replenish isn't 'replace' unfortunately.

They are supposed to check the levels and top-up if required.

I'm not a betting man but I reckon it is rarely done.

Apologies to the OP, I don't mean to hijack the thread, but is changing the gearbox oil on an Octy Scout an easy job to do, one that a competent mechanic (standfast me!) could do?

If so, approximate cost  and what oil is recommended?

MTIA.

Gearbox really simple on the 6 spd, 17mm hex required.

Remove engine undertray on the scouts its steel so pretty heavy, Drain plug on the bottom and refill port on the side. Fill until it dribbles out and then refit plug.

Don't quote me on this but I think it takes 2.3 lts, the 5spd is 1.9 and is more of a faff as it has to be filled via the reverse switch.

The scout also has a transfer box at the front, drain point is easy to get to but refill has awkward access being above the right hand driveshaft.

I just get the oil from Skoda, right oil - latest specs  and not expensive.

Before someone else mentions it - remember the haldex oil and filter - no special tools required. I use a squirt can to refill.

Scott
