Not Bonding With It Yet.

Featured Replies

Picked up the new car yesterday (SEL Exec 150 DSG) and while I love the way it looks I have to say I'm struggling a bit to bond with ita at the moment. I didn't get that warm feeling inside that you should get on driving away from the dealership in it. Probably wasn't helped by the crap handover I experienced. Fuel gauge showing 10 miles worth of fuel in the tank, and the salesman steadfastly refusing to throw in a set of mats.

I'm coming from an E Class SE which was like riding on a cushion of air, and I'm just not feeling the same quality of ride in the Superb. I have no doubt that the inch bigger wheels and the lower profile tyres will play a small part, but it just seems a bit more crashy over bumps. Perhaps I'm expecting too much??

There are a lot of little features I like, like the personalisation thing with the keys (still need to work out how to do it though, the salesman didn't have a clue either) which will be handy because the wife and I sit in completely different driving positions. Plus I like Apple CarPlay, that seems pretty cool. One other thing that disappoints me though is the lack of POI's on the sat nav. I think they have missed a trick by only adding petrol stations, restaurants and car parks. Is there any way to add more?

The DSG 'box is lovely though, I much prefer it to the one in the Merc, although like the Merc 'box it sometimes holds onto a gear to long without changing up.

One thing I'm certainly looking forward to though is vastly improved fuel economy. I was only averaging about 32-34mpg around town in the Merc, but I'm expecting much better out of the Superb.

Ill start using it properly from Tuesday on so hopefully with the more miles I put under the wheels the more I will bond with it.

Do you have DCC?

Personalisation u can set your Name, then when entering the Car you can chose 4 drivers or Guest, then the Climate, Seat, Ambientlight, Radio, Assistance Systems, and so on all set to your Settings. You can do that with all 3 keys!

POI all are in there. Just type it in where you type the Adress for the Satnav, like in Google and it finds it for your. The 3 separate POI are just Shortcuts. You can also Import more over a SD card if you like.

Do Read the Manual, life will be easyer after that :)

Does not sound like the handover went well, but saying that if you compare that to when mine was delivered... mine arrived on a trailer to my house, unloaded and asked to check for marks.. given the handbook and off he went... (mines a company car though)  - on a postive i think i got around 90 miles worth of fuel !

Regarding POI's, theres many more than you mentioned on the system, plus theres some threads on the forum about how to add more..

Im sure you will gel more with the car in the coming days..

I agree the suspension and the ride (especially on the larger wheels) isn't fantastic around pothole ridden town roads. Check your tyre pressures, many dealers set them to 38psi ('eco') but the car is much softer and easier to live with at 32psi ('normal'). It's only 6psi but it makes a big difference to the feel in the cabin.

Sorry to say but handover isn't the time to be negotiating for extras mate! You missed a trick there and should have done all that during the order process. You've already ordered, signed on the dotted line and agreed to pay / paid by the time handover arrives, so there's no incentive to throw in even more extras (i.e. cut into the profits) by then.

As said above you can get more POIs imported from an SD Card or USB drive. For example PocketGPSWorld have speed cameras (£19 a year), but also tons of free POIs like various supermarkets, fuel station brands, ATMs and goodness knows what else. There's loads. Search for BillyJim's post on how to convert POIs (on VW's site) to be uploaded to the Columbus (sat nav unit).

Spend some time with the car and it'll grow on you. I had a love/hate relationship with mine at first but now I love it. :D

Cheers for the replies so far guys. Good to know that there are more POI's and that I can also add more with an SD card.

Let's hope you don't like to have your seat all the back or as low as it will go, or you will soon grow to hate personalisation - it will move the seat forwards and upwards every time you unlock it!

there are so many things I don't like about mine, such as nowhere to rest your foot when using cruise control; 'adaptive' cruise control; you can't put anything bigger than a mars bar in the glove box without crushing it; the load cover (estate) which won't retract; the 4" step in the load area when you drop the back seats!  Oh, I could go on (yawn)!

having said that, I'm learning a lot here that isn't in the handbook, like I've just learned about POIs.

Ha, it's a good job I'm way too short to need that sitting position then.

No, the car didn't come with that.

Do you physically have to get in the car and choose which driver or can it be done from the key. I'm sure I read in the hand book that you can use a setting with a particular key and when you open unlock the car and open the door with that key it will adjust automatically?

I'll try that, cheers.

Yeah, I agree with you, but having mentioned it during negotiations (I was told then that my SII mats would fit) I really did think it would have had a new set in when collecting. I've never not got a new set of mats thrown in before

Will check that out, thanks.

I'd agree with this. I think the ride quality has been over-egged somewhat in reviews where they're on test tracks and other good surfaces. Mine is beautiful on a good stretch of road, but they are incredibly rare where I live. More often than not it's a little crashy over potholes and poor surfaces.

I don't think it's bad by any stretch, it's just that I think our expectations are set a little too high by many of the reviews that are out there.

I agree that in normal setting the ride is not perfect, especially taking into account the length of the wheelbase, but better than many cars with 18 inch wheels.  It may just be worth asking your dealer to check that all of the transport blocks have been removed from your front springs.  My dealer managed to leave three in mine, all on one side.  Made for an interesting couple of weeks driving.  No longer my dealer.

I specced DCC with mine and have found that IMHO the individual setting using comfort for ride and sport setting for everything else gives the best overall ride/handling compromise for most conditions.  The steering feels more accurate, the front end better tied down but still with some compliance in the ride.  In due course changing the tyres to Michelins may well help further, judging by past experience with a Mazda 6.  They will certainly grip better.

Like you, I did not get off to a very good start with the car but six months and 6,000 miles later it has settled down and I am happy with it now.  Even had a coat of Gtechniq today so it must be doing something right.
