DMF vs SMF conversion

Featured Replies

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

My car is going in next week and can't decide on whether to keep DMF or convert? (is mileage a big factor??)

Pricing of keeping DMF compared to converting to SMF?

Reliability and longevity of them both?

Performance?

The SMF is inherently more reliable and does last the rest of the life of the vehicle, but the refinement in the drive train is not as good, however the driveshafts may need changing for stronger ones as they take more strain with a SMF.

At work we change a lot of DMF's with every clutch change (apart from petrol engine's), they are not the most reliable of thing and at anywhere between £300-500 just for the DMF they prove very expensive, That said the refinement of them is good.

If it was me i'd keep with a DMF and get a good quality item, Luk and Sachs is what we use at work, my old octy was still on original clutch and DMF at 66k and no signs of wear or rattling.

To follow on from mike's point, I've been in one of his converted cars, and it feels no different in comfort. But it makes a difference to responsiveness for sure, makes his 105bhp 1.9 feel like my remapped 1.9 a lot of the time!

what about converting the dmf to a smf on the 2 liter bkd engines? Has any one done it at all?

I was advised by my vw specialist to avoid the  SMF conversion for 2.0 TDI and best stick to DMF due to harshness you get with the conversion and he said best to stick what what vw designed the components around.

We done a BKD at work and the results wern't good, Had to change driveshafts as the original items didn't cope with the strain, and the engine didn't run or drive as nice.

As Mike as said the 1.9's and 1.6's respond really good to the SMF conversion and yes on these we have never ever changed driveshafts.

My old Octy had the BKD lump so i would of kept the DMF on that.

I will stick to DMF then, even though I have the 1.9tdi I do believe in this statement 'best to stick what what vw designed the components around'

VW do do a conversion kit to SMF for the 1.9's and i believe the oem stuff is manufactured by sach's

How's the old girl doing? Many's the time we wish we hadn't let her go!

Shes going well! Had a trip to London in her the other day, drives lovely ;) Gulps down the miles with no problem :)

Five years and 60K miles later (blimey that has gone quickly), I am still happy with the solid flywheel conversion in my 1.9PD. It still pulls strongly and smoothly, and there is absolutely no vibration through the pedals.

Yes it has been done check darkside developments website they do several different kits for both 2.0s bmn and bkd some are loud on tickover thats what people dont like , but hold big power ,

There are lots of options now but cost lots of your hard earned .

Cheers willy! That's something to ponder on!
