Mine is the Superb II twin door facelift 1.4 tsi manual and I was suprised how well it went when I test drove it - so I bought it. Pulls OK from 1500rpm (but not as well as my previous Superb I 1.9 pd) but the power buids up strongly after 3000rpm. The gearbox is very smooth and precise but sixth gear must be a tall overdrive 2000rpm is nearly 60mph (ie 6000 rpm would be nearly 180mph - er no I don't think so!). It's suprisingly responsive at motorway speeds though even in sixth, the only time I've had to change down was going up steep motorway inclines in France fully laden with people/luggage.

Economy has been better than expected being only about 4mpg worse (with the same driver/type of driving ) than my Superb I 1.9pd. Overall average about 46mpg (see spritmonitor in signature below) but on a long run if you are not too lively with the loud pedal you can push the mpg north of 50mpg. As yet I've never had to top up with oil between services (now 42k miles).

Re the EA111 engine (Superb III has the totally different EA211)

  • It's a cam chain - early versions of this engine had issues with the chain/tensioner, I believe (hope) sorted later in it's production
  • Auxillary belt driven water pump (ie not on cam belt or chain)
  • No EGR valve(function done by variable valve timing)
  • Most don't have a DMF
  • External clutch slave cylinder and clutch operating fork (avoids concentric slave cylinder or gearbox destructing Sachs cover plate issues of the 2.0 6 speed diesel gearbox)
  • There are reports that petrol direct injection engines eventually carbon up their valves (no petrol washing) although inproved crankcase beathing/ modified variable vave timing is supposed to have improved this - we shall see (The latest larger petrol engines on the Superb II have bot direct and port injecction)
  • Inside the car the engine is silent at tickover

Why did I buy a petrol?

  • It's really quiet - very welcome when sat in traffic
  • It was cheap (with the nearly new deal I got it was £5k cheaper than the 2.0 diesel - that's a lot of petrol)
  • I have had previous EGR issues and was worried about having a DPF as my long commute is rather slow & stop/start. A friend with an Octavia diesel had endless DPF problems on nearly the same journey.

Big john, I will take this on board, my daughter has just bought a Nissan Kashki, was in it the other day and it was pulling like a train, asked her what engine , she said a 1.2, could not believe it, it felt like a 2 ltr

One thing to remember about the 1.4 is that it's not available in higher trim levels on the Superb 2. Whether or not that's an issue is up to you.

Saying that the facelift "S" had some standard additions - bluetooth, steering wheel & voice control, cruise, stop/start , front fogs . I had rear parking sensors retrofitted as part of the purchase deal (it already had a full size spare wheel)

Ah - as this was in the Superb II secction presumed we were looking at the II models

In the Superb III the 1.4 is available in up to SE L and yes this does come with xenons. The engine is the 150 ps EA211 with Active Cylinder Technology as well
