New gearbox oil change for Yeti 110

Featured Replies

Our Yeti 110 diesel front wheel drive has now done 89,000 miles on the clock without any problems to date and would like to change the gearbox oil as t must be pretty black by now?

What gearbox oil can you replace once it has been drained down? Have not checked the Skoda prices charged in their garage yet but would like some equivalent brands if possible.

Noticed that some are rated at API GL-4 and a synthetic oil from Comma API GL-5 what's the difference?

Should have said it is the early model (2011) with a gearbox before 29th May 2011 when purchased.

Manual gear oil does not go black unless there is a contamination problem somewhere.

The oil tends to look in relatively good condition when drained (unless there's been some form of issue) and is usually in there for the majority of the life of the box, this is usually why there is no change interval in the workshop manuals or price on the fixed price service menu.

the oil may very well follow suit with many other VW group boxes and use 75w90s which can be purchased through the likes of the dealer for not very much money and they normally take around 2/3 litres.

Stick to VAG gearbox oil or Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID FE SAE 75W as other spec oil may cause the change to be notchy when cold.

Hi K100RS,

I enquired about gearbox oil change about a year ago and was told that the original oil is for life.

My Yeti is a 1.8 petrol TSI with DSG.

Does your car have the 6 speed dsg. box?

Yes James, it has a 6 gear (speed) dsg.

Then your oil is due for changing at 40k or 4 years and not sealed for life as your dealer have wrongly advised

Thanks for your reply.

Are you sure it's 6 speed?

I thought 1.8 TSI got the 7 speed?

Thanks James

Went off to Skoda in Norwich and purchased two one litre  bottles of Volkswagen G052 512 A2 gear oil at around £12.00/litre for our 5 speed 2011SE 110 Yeti.

Seems very runny compared with a normal 75W gearbox oil.

Having been employed in a lab years ago testing oils the sealed for life thrown now at the customer does make me laugh. As a biker BMW's air cooled twins always had a drain plug at the bottom of their rear drive bevel casting to change the oil normally Hypoy EP90 and after a few years that would come out pretty dark with metallic particles suspended in the oil. Then recently they stopped putting in the drain plug and came up with the famous saying of "sealed for life" (how many years?) Many owners had the main support ball race fail that meant a complete strip down of the rear drive or a locked wheel.

All oils will break down over time and the advantage to a mechanically minded person is that by changing the engine oil and gearbox oil one can keep an eye on any damage or wear starting with worn ball race cages or small metallic particles coming off the gear teeth before real damage comes along. To me this is important as I do not change my vehicle every couple of years or on a loan agreement. The cost of something like £24.00 for gearbox oil and piece of mind is good value to me. I still am amazed at no information from car companies about gearbox oil for their service manuals or user pamphlets. Welcome to the throw away world.

Phil-E,

If it was a 1.8TSI with a DQ200 7 speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG then it might be part of the 'World Wide REcall' (EU Service Campaign) to change the Synthetic Oil to Mineral & do the software update, but then Skoda Australia or the Dealership should be able to confirm that as they have the information.

(So DQ200 should be no Oil Change other than if VW Group decided that as a preventative measure one is required or recommended.)

This is the New Zealand vehicles that were involved and not just as here 2009-2011.
