Intermittent DRL bulb

Featured Replies

I have started to get bulb failure warnings for my DRL bulbs. At first I followed the handbook advice to try to take out the Fog/DRL assembly without success. On here I found others had the same issue of not getting access and various ways were suggested. I tried credit cards and others without success. I gave up as the light repaired itself after a few days. Same thing a month later on the other bulb. Now I have another bulb failure on the nearside.

I discovered that you can take out two of the inner wing liner screws to get to the back of the lamps. No success in releasing the Fog/DRL assy but I could now twist the bulb holder from the reflector and then twist the bulb from the connector. Note the cable is short.

I had simply removed the lower two T20 screws and pulled the lower part of the shield from behind the upper part and pushed them against each other to form a hole for my arm, as shown in the photo. Taking out a third inner screw is another way but then you would have to tie the parts back to get your arm in.

The problem was that after 58,000 miles and 5 years, the solder pip on the end of the bulb had been rubbed away by vibration and no longer making contact.

I just used a soldering iron to put back the original blob of solder. Job done - now working again.

As an aside, if you look in the access hole in the second photo you can see a pipe hanging down. It has a plug at the end with a small hole in it and I assume it is a drain pipe for something. Anyone know? air con drain? scuttle drain?

I think the pipe may connect into the air filter box or pipework.

Could this be an exit from refrigerator system when it needs to throw some coolant when it gets very hot and level gets up in the maximum?
