Thrum/hum at 70mph

Featured Replies

Had our Superb for a month now (CR170, 6sp DSG, 4x4, Elegance). Mainly delighted.

Only surprise is that the engine note can become a bit intrusive at motorway speeds. I'm 99% sure it is not the gearbox/drivetrain as the sound is not like a whine or mechanical hum at all. Also, unlikely to be the haldex as the sound seems to come from the front of the car. It's more like a loudish hum/thrum kind of exhaust note. Worse when climbing hills (when engine is working a bit harder).

There's no obvious 'blowing' from the exhaust and the car only has 17k miles on it so that would be a bit of a surprise anyway.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Might just be that this is the sound these cars make but thought I'd poll for opinion while I still have some warranty on the car.

Cheers,

Thanks but I don't think so. If I knock the car down into 5th gear the sound changes/reduces. It's definitely RPM related. I think it comes up at 70mph simply because it's a sweet spot of the engine rpm/load that makes it most pronounced.

Sounds like the noise I get from around 55MPH ... you can notice a definite change on the noise, just like an exhaust blow/roar...

I do know my rear tyres are almost down to the wear limit so I will be fitting 4 new tyres soon so I will soon see if it is tyre noise due to wear.... I am going to replace with the Michelin Cross Climate as it is a 4x4 so get the best of both worlds...

Exhaust blow/rumble/roar. Yes, that sounds about right. Our previous car was a volvo xc70 and while it had a few faults, the cabin noise when cruising was really minimal. I guess I'm just used to that.

I need a couple of tyres (nails in both) and am looking at all season tyres too. Top of the pile for me are nokian weatherproofs. They seem to get better reviews than the michelins and can be had for £114 inc fitting from black circles. Might be worth a look.

I have a similar noise around 70, which I expect is the tyres, and sounds like it's coming from the front of the car

It is the same "tone" as if you were driving at 70 in 5th, but fainter, and is not based on engine speed - if I go beyond 70 and put the clutch in, the engine note dies but the thrum continues. Also it is more/less noticeable on different tarmac types.

Will have a look at those :) I think there is only a couple of thousand miles at the most left in them....

I did think mine was an exhaust blow or something vibrates, but dealer had a look at said it sounded normal to him... apart from some road noise so maybe it is tyres as they wear down or get close to the limit....

Thanks Peter. I'd read over those posts but since the noise is not speed (but rather rpm) or road surface dependent I had discounted them. Also, the tyres all have about 7mm on them and are not showing any unusual wear.

That said, ta for the links. I'll keep it in mind and see what happens when I get around to swapping the tyres.

I had both front wheel bearings replaced this year on my Superb estate under warranty. The noise did change when knocked down to fifth from sixth (also DSG). Both done under 60k miles.

Now nice and quiet, well apart from the diesel clatter when under load (such as hills). Previous TSI was much better in that respect.

Ta for the tyre tip. Look good but I'm looking for something with snow capability. We get regular snow over the winter where we live.

  • 6 years later...

I had a broken front wheel bearing that gave a distinct humming noise on my 2013 model. Changed bearings at dealer within 5-year guarantee / 100' period and all OK.

Now at 166', I'm havimg a little bit different humming in the rear, that I suspect can be a broken diff bearing or maybe a wheel bearing, need to find out more about that.

Both front and back tyres can give noise, I see on the forum here.
